She recently released her debut album, On the phone with my mom, which she made with her creative partner and significant other, producer and songwriter Cade Hoppe. With her album, On the phone with my mom, out now, we took some time to hear from Maddie Regent. Read below to learn more about Maddie Regent, the story behind her debut album, and what’s to come.

Hi Maddie Regent! Let’s start with how did you get your artist name?

My first name is Madeline, but people have always called me Maddie, so it just felt right to make music under the name Maddie Regent.

What city are you from and where are you based now?

I’m originally from Toronto, Canada, but I’ve spent the last ten years in New York City. I’m actually moving to Los Angeles this summer though, which is super exciting!

At what point in your life did you decide to pursue a career in music? How did you get started?

I’ve always had a deep love for music and storytelling, but it wasn’t until college—where I was actually studying film—that I really began to connect with other musicians. Those connections gave me the confidence to start creating and eventually releasing my own music.

Has your upbringing played a role in shaping who you are and defining your sound today? If so, how?

Yes, of course! I’m the older sister of three girls, so growing up I always felt very connected to my emotions and my femininity. All of my favorite artists are women who thrive in the vulnerability of their music, so that definitely shaped what I’m able to do now with my music.

How would you describe your sound to readers who may not be familiar with you?

I’d describe my sound as alternative-pop with singer-songwriter elements. I’m very inspired by the songwriting of artists like Lana Del Rey and Taylor Swift, and the production elements of The 1975.

Do you have any hobbies outside of music? What do you do to stay creative?

I love to read and see movies. My boyfriend and I see at least one movie a week in theaters – I’m a proud AMC A-List member!

Who are some of your main musical influences?

Lana Del Rey and MARINA are two of my favorite artists – I credit them with my pop music awakening at fifteen. I love the drama, the story, and the vibe of their music.

Who would be a dream to collaborate with?

I am going to collab with Lana Del Rey one day…even if I’m just in the room while she makes music. MARK MY WORDS!

What are some of your future music career goals?

I’d love to create a visual album one day where my songs are put together into a film narrative.

What’s one of the proudest moments of your music career so far?

I think finishing and independently releasing my album, On the phone with my mom, will be the thing that I feel most proud of for a long time. It’s really hard to follow your dream, put your all into it, and then release it out into the universe for people to judge. I really feel so much better as a person and artist from just following with my heart and believing in myself.

What would you say are the greatest lessons that you’ve learned so far?

Support your friends! It means so much.

Now onto your release, On the phone with my mom. What inspired this project?

I think that I was ready to dive deeper into my life and really push my songwriting to new heights. My boyfriend and I moved into a new apartment, and we created our own little home studio, which really helped us start experimenting. We wanted to see how far we could push my songwriting and sound.

What is the overall theme of On the phone with my mom?

At its core, On the phone with my mom is an album about girlhood, womanhood, and the connections that I have with the women in my life.

Is there a specific song from On the phone with my mom that speaks to you the most? If so, what is it called?

They all speak to me, but the one that I’m feeling the most right now is ‘Fountain of youth/man is a knife.’

What message do you hope fans take away from your music and from On the phone with my mom?

I hope people are able to listen and realize that there is nothing wrong with them! Being able to feel your emotions is a super power. I encourage them to put this album on, lay on their bed, stare at the ceiling, and feel all their deepest feelings.

What’s next for you? Are you working on any upcoming projects, or do you have any upcoming shows that we should be on the lookout for?

I’m always writing and planning new things. I’m hoping to get some live performances on the schedule soon!
