Poet and rapper Séhkou closes out August with a new single, “John 11:38-44 (Lazarus).” The budding MC masterfully blends Boom Bap and Christian Hip-Hop/Rap. Séhkou added an R&B/Soul sound by enlisting renowned songstress Jamila Thompson to provide her soulful, powerful voice.
“John 11:38-44 (Lazarus)” is a survival and resilience anthem. The record makes use of Séhkou’s downtrodden yet hopeful bars and Jamila Thompson’s emotive vocals to set the tone. “Rather than retelling John 11 literally, I use Lazarus as a framework for examining death and resurrection in a broader sense: lost identity, obscurity, struggle, spiritual formation, and the experience of emerging from circumstances that once appeared permanent,” Séhkou states.
“John 11:38-44 (Lazarus)” is a part of Séhkou’s broader project, SOLUS. SOLUS bridges the gap between scripture and the human experience. The budding music artist continues to inspire and wow audiences with his faith-inspired tunes.
