With “The Real Yuee” out now, we took some time to hear from Yung Yuee. Read below to learn more about Yung Yuee, the story behind “The Real Yuee,” and what’s to come.
Hi Yung Yuee! Let’s start with how did you choose your moniker?
My family called me YouYuee growing up – eventually classmates called me Yuee, and it was history from there.
What city are you from, and where are you based now?
I’m from Chicago, but I live in New Haven, Indiana.
What makes your story unique?
I’m a full c4 quadriplegic on trach ventilator. I was shot three years ago with a female that I was seeing. I survived, but became paralyzed, and she didn’t make it.
At what point in your life did you decide to pursue a career in music? How did you get started?
i started at about thirteen. I grew up around family who where heavily involved in making music, which influenced me.
How would you describe your sound?
Melodic and motivational.
Do you have any hobbies outside of music? What do you do to stay creative?
I produce beats, working on a comic/series, building a universe around hip-hop, fashion, and art.
Who are some of your main musical influences?
Lupe Fiasco, G Herbo, Bump J, Wiz Khalifa, and Curren$y.
What’s one of the proudest moments of your music career so far?
This year, I managed to learn to use eye gaze tech.
What would you say are the greatest lessons that you’ve learned so far?
You have to know yourself – it’s easy to lose yourself.
Now onto your release, “The Real Yuee.” What inspired this song?
I made this when I was going through a mental breakdown. I was finding myself and music was my therapist.
What was the inspiration behind the cover artwork for “The Real Yuee?”
I feel like I’m constantly in a battle with reality finding myself in crazy unbelievable situations.
How did the collaboration with Ricogotthatfye come about?
I heard the beat on YouTube. When I spoke, it was like it listened to me.
What was the creative process like when making “The Real Yuee?”
I practiced my vocals and every word to the syllable.
How long did it take to complete “The Real Yuee?”
I locked in for 48 hours.
What do you hope fans take away from “The Real Yuee” and your music in general?
That change is possible – you can achieve whatever your mind is set on; love yourself.
What’s next? Are you working on any upcoming projects, or do you have any upcoming shows that we should be on the lookout for?
I’m building a world called The Trenches Universe that is coming this fall.
