Sweet Mess is a Phoenix, Arizona-based hard rock quartet that evolved from a premier female rock tribute act into a powerful original music force. Formed in 2018 by drummer Michael Hayes and lead vocalist Sylvie, the band spent years honoring icons like Joan Jett, Pat Benatar, and Blondie. Featuring Sylvie’s powerhouse vocals, Fer Lopez on lead guitar, Rob Watson on bass, and Michael Hayes on drums, the group made the leap to writing their own music in early 2026. Blending classic rock swagger with the modern bite of bands like Halestorm and The Pretty Reckless, their original discography—including singles “Midnight Knows My Name,” “Violate the Night,” “Let’s Just Go,” and their latest track, “My Machine”—captures the unapologetic, raw, live energy that defines their sound. Having shared stages with national acts like Great White and Stryper, Sweet Mess continues to deliver a high-voltage rock experience.

Hi! Let’s start with how did the band’s name come about?
The answer is kinda cheesy. HAHA… We used the first letters from Sylvie’s name and my name, Michael, so S – M = Sweet Mess. It’s always hard to find a decent band name, but this is what we came up with and it has been working for us!
What city are you all from, and where are you all based now?
Now, we’re based right out of the desert in Phoenix, Arizona! Sylvie, Rob, and Michael have all known each other from the local Phoenix music scene for years, and we’re proud to call the Valley our home base. Our original homes were as follows, Sylvie is from Montreal, Canada…Rob is from Belfast Ireland…Fer is from Tijuana, Mexico and Michael is from Wisconsin right here in the U.S.A.
What’s your band’s favorite part about the Phoenix music scene?
The resilience and the high-energy rock circuit! The fans here absolutely love loud, heavy, live music. Plus, we’ve known each other through this scene for years before fully forming the band, so it really feels like one big, loud, supportive family to us.
How and when did the band form?
Our drummer Michael Hayes and our lead singer Sylvie founded the band back in 2018. We actually started out as a tribute act paying homage to the absolute greatest female rock legends. Sylvie, Rob, and Michael have been friends in the scene for a long time, and we eventually found our killer lead guitarist, Fer Lopez, through a Bandmix ad. He fit right in with the rest of us perfectly, and the chemistry was instant!
Since you all spent years as a tribute band, what is your band’s absolute favorite cover song to play live?
Oh, that’s a tough one! We cover so many legends, but Joan Jett’s “I Love Rock and Roll” or Blondie’s “Dreamin” always get the crowd singing along at the top of their lungs. It’s impossible not to feel the electric energy in the room when those classic riffs hit!
How would you all describe your band’s sound?
We like to say that we sit right in the sweet spot between classic hard rock swagger and contemporary, heavy female-fronted rock. You’re gonna hear thick, gritty guitars, a super tight rhythm section, and unapologetic, raw live energy. We try to capture that real, unpolished, high-voltage vibe you get at a loud, packed rock show.
Who are some of your group’s main musical influences?
Because of our tribute roots, we’re heavily influenced by the original queens of classic rock—Pat Benatar, Joan Jett, Lita Ford, and Blondie. As we shifted into writing our original material, we drew a ton of inspiration from modern heavy hitters like Halestorm, The Pretty Reckless, The Warning, and even a little punk-pop flavor from Paramore.
What’s one of the proudest moments of your group’s music career so far?
One massive highlight has been sharing the stage with some iconic national touring acts like Great White, Missing Persons, and recently, Christian metal legends Stryper. But honestly, making the leap in 2026 to finally write and release our own original music—and seeing our fans and radio stations like Glacer FM embrace it—has been an incredibly proud feeling.
What would you all say are the greatest lessons that you’ve all learned so far?
This is a cliché answer…but, do what you love and keep doing it!
Now onto “My Machine.” What inspired this song?
“My Machine” was really inspired by that heavy, universal feeling of being weighed down by the daily grind and external pressures. It’s about that breaking point where you feel like you’re tangled in a “cold design” that isn’t really yours, and the very real struggle to reclaim your personal control. Everyone creates their own machine, sometimes intentional but quite often without realizing it!
What is “My Machine” about?
Lyrically, it tackles the battle to take back your own life and your own narrative. It asks the profound question, “My thoughts are mine, but who’s in control?” It’s ultimately about finding the strength to “restart my fire” and break free from the expectations or systems that try to hold you down. Usually self-inflicted consequences to life’s decisions.
What was the inspiration behind the cover artwork for “My Machine?”
Nothing dramatic here…just trying to convey the song through art. The cover is composed of a wizard, a Tesla coil and an old factory in the background. If you watch the video, you can see the interaction of these elements a little better.
What was the creative process like when making “My Machine?”
Like our other original singles from this year, we recorded at Mind’s Eye Digital Studio in Glendale, AZ with our amazing producer Larry Elyea. We thrive on raw, live energy, so we prefer to capture that unpolished, unapologetic grit rather than over-producing everything. It’s all about thick guitars, thunderous drums, and letting the natural chemistry of the band drive the track forward!
How long did it take to complete “My Machine?”
This song and two others were recorded and mixed over 8 hours in two days. We like to keep it kinda raw. Some have pointed that out our music is a little unpolished but that’s how we like it and it feels real! It’s a really cool dynamic with the music a little raw and then the power of Sylvie’s voice!
What do you all hope fans take away from “My Machine” and your band’s music in general?
With “My Machine,” we hope it really resonates with anyone feeling weighed down, giving them a heavy anthem to help restart their fire. In general, we want people to listen to our music and come to our shows and just feel that pure rock and roll energy. We are a group of friends having a lot of fun playing music, and we want to share that wild, live rock experience with everyone! If you don’t like the machine you’ve created for yourself, create a different one!
What’s next? Are you all working on any upcoming projects, or do you all have any upcoming shows that we should be on the lookout for?
We are consistently playing rock venues around the Phoenix area, integrating our new original music into our live sets, and we are always on the lookout for more opportunities to open for national touring acts. Keep an eye on our website for specific upcoming gig dates and new music! We will be releasing new music every 30 to 45 days and want to keep in front of our existing fans and find new ones as well.
