With “Daylight’s Wastin’” out now, we took some time to hear from Rick Lockwood. Read below to learn more about Rick Lockwood, the story behind “Daylight’s Wastin’,” and what’s to come.

Hi Rick Lockwood! What city are you from, and where are you based now?

I’m originally from Falmouth, MA (Cape Cod) – now living in Monument Beach, MA.

At what point in your life did you decide to pursue a career in music? How did you get started?

In my mid-twenty’s, I decided to give music a shot full time.  I started teaching guitar and opened my own studio/retail space, The Guitar Shop, in North Falmouth, MA as well as playing gigs 3-4 times a week.

How would you describe your sound to readers who may not be familiar with you?

It certainly is guitar based. I started writing and recording in the Country/Americana lane about 5 or six years ago. I’ve always loved that stuff, I think it suits me vocally more than Rock. My instrumental music is more a combination of Rock/Jazz/Latin styles.

Do you have any hobbies outside of music? What do you do to stay creative?

Harley Davidson – Golf.  I’m always writing, thinking of the next song idea or lyric, constantly editing to make the tune as best as it can be.

Who are some of your main musical influences?

Beck, Clapton, Johnny A., Dwight Yoakam, Kenny Burrell, Vince Gill.

What’s one of the proudest moments of your music career so far?

In 2022, my single, “Forever Gone,” was named honorable mention in the Country category of the New England Songwriting Competition. It was the first song that I recorded at my home studio…pretty cool.

What would you say are the greatest lessons that you’ve learned so far?

Serve the song…you can never spend too much time on lyrics…understanding when the song is finished.

Now onto your release, “Daylight’s Wastin’.” What inspired this song? What is “Daylight’s Wastin’” about?

I was listening to Dylan’s “Modern Times”…his blues/shuffle tunes seem to go on forever, yet you keep listening. I always thought that he writes about 15 verses for each of his songs and uses the best 6. “Daylight’s Wastin’” has 6 verses, so maybe that’s the formula.

I tried to use separate imagery and subject matter for each verse, then hopefully they would work together as a whole.

What was the creative process like when making “Daylight’s Wastin’?”

Always music first with me. Messing around on the guitar…then take it from there. Once the lyrics start, the music almost becomes secondary. The words are the main focus.

How long did it take to complete “Daylight’s Wastin’?”

This one was relatively quick…only a couple hours to write.

What is your favorite lyric in “Daylight’s Wastin’” and why?

Verse 3…”One likes to dance, the other likes to read the news….I’ll take ’em both downtown, leave ’em with a single shoe.” It’s abstract and doesn’t make sense, but works.

What message or messages do you hope fans take away from “Daylight’s Wastin’” and your music in general?

That they’re good songs…and you want to hear them again.

What’s next for you? Are you working on any upcoming projects, or do you have any upcoming shows that we should be on the lookout for?

Working on an EP currently, should be out in 2027-28.
