Following a four-year hiatus, Iceland’s Brynja Rán kicked off the year with a slew of releases. The songstress now releases her debut EP, SEVEN. The four-track EP features three fan-favorites and one never-before-heard song. Brynja Rán’s eclectic, ethereal EP is chock-full of jams that contain elements from a variety of genres: Jazz, R&B, Indie Pop, Neo-Soul, etc.

SEVEN‘s overall theme is heartbreak, healing, and self-reflection. The EP starts off with “None Of You.” The song has resonating lyrics and bodacious instrumentation that crescendos perfectly. Track two, “Fool For A Lie,” tackles toxic love and its grip. The jazzy sound plus Brynja Rán’s enthralling hook make the song immaculate. The penultimate record, “Bastard,” has deep lyrics aimed at a former lover. The song denotes a switch in the style and tempo of the EP. “Bastard” is an Alt-Pop, Neo-Soul song with emotive vocals. The closer, “Lullaby,” is a funky, Indie R&B track. The song’s slower tempo allows Brynja Rán’s raw, dreamy vocals to shine. The ad-libs and breakdown within “Lullaby” are masterful.

Brynja Rán’s SEVEN is captivating from start to finish. The introspective and extrospective storytelling is top-notch and showcases Brynja Rán’s brilliance and expertise. SEVEN is prelude of what’s to come. The genre-defying songbird is back like she never left.
