Princess Ella Discusses New Song, Being African Royalty, and More

Princess Ella is a Nigeria-born Afro singer, performer, and songwriter based in the U.S. Exposed to music from birth, Princess Ella composed her first song at the age of ten and performed it at a family event. Princess Ella sang in the church choir throughout all of her teenage years. She started recording in the studio at the age of thriteen with her elder brother. She plays the piano, guitar, and drums. Her first EP, “Wonder Woman,” was released in 2021, showcasing her talent as a multi-instrumentalist. Princess Ella’s mission is to spread great, diverse music across the globe while encouraging people to pursue their dreams. Renowned for her remarkable achievements, including the release of two EPs and a nomination for the Fast Rising Artist category at the prestigious 2023 D’CEM Awards, Princess Ella has solidified her presence within the music industry. With multiple appearances in the top 50 Shazamed songs across the United States and features in prominent news outlets such as FOX, the singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist has gained well-deserved recognition.

Hi Princess Ella! Let’s start with how did you get your artist name?

So, I’m an African Princess and Ella is a name that stuck from my university days.

What city are you from and where are you based now?

I am originally from Edo state, Nigeria, but raised in the city of Lagos. I am currently based in Atlanta, Georgia.

At what point in your life did you decide to pursue a career in music? How did you get started?

I started singing at the age of nine. My first song in the studio was when I was thirteen years old. I did music for a couple of years when I was in university and stopped. I recently got back to it in 2020.

Has your upbringing played a role in shaping who you are and defining your sound today? If so, how?

Yes, it has. I was highly influenced by my elder brother, who was also a Rap artist. My dad was a music lover – we had all of the top records.

How would you describe your sound to readers who may not be familiar with you?

My sound is infused with a mix of Afrobeat, Afro-Soul, Afro-Rnb, and Afropop.

Do you have any hobbies outside of music? What do you do to stay creative?

Yes, I am an IT specialist. I love technology and protecting systems/computers.

Who are some of your main musical influences?

Chris Brown, Usher Raymond, Tekno, and Oxlade.

What are some of your future music career goals?

Some of My future music career goals are:

Be known for feel-good music.

Change lives and make people happy with my music.

Now onto your release, ‘Hennessy.’ What inspired this song?

It came to me unconsciously, and I’m a sucker for love, so I always sing about it.

What is ‘Hennessy’ about in your own words?

‘Hennessy’ is a love song that talks about how loving someone makes you feel intoxicated. You literally don’t have control over how you feel anymore ’cause you love them.

What is your favorite lyric in ‘Hennessy’ and why?

The part that says, ‘I don’t want nobody else, I just want you for myself.’

What message do you hope fans take away from your music and from ‘Hennessy?’

Love, love, love – love is a beautiful thing. Never give up on loving someone.

What’s one of the proudest moments of your music career so far?

Being able to perform in front of a crowd, having people send me direct messages talking about my songs, and receiving an award for my creativity.

What would you say are the greatest lessons that you’ve learned so far?

Consistency is key. Never give up, no matter what.

What’s next for you? Are you working on any upcoming projects, or do you have any upcoming shows that we should be on the lookout for?

I have a couple of projects that I’m currently working on. Collabs with other artists too.
