Blending classic influences with modern production, marcball is a storyteller proving that it’s never too late to bring your art to life.

With “Words” out now, we took some time to hear from marcball. Read below to learn more about marcball, the story behind “Words,” and what’s to come.

Hi marcball! Let’s start with how did you get your artist name?

It’s quite simple: it’s a combination of my first name and the first three letters of my last name. It felt direct, honest, and it just sounded right in my head.

What city are you from, and where are you based now?

I was born and raised in Barcelona, and I’m still here. It is the city of my life, my greatest love, and a constant source of inspiration for my music. There’s something in the air of this city that keeps my creativity flowing.

At what point in your life did you decide to pursue a career in music? How did you get started?

Music has always been my escape. As a kid, I was fascinated by how a song could make my imagination soar. I would spend hours writing lyrics and composing melodies by humming them, even before I had the tools to produce them.

How would you describe your sound to readers who may not be familiar with you?

I focus on “intertwined melodies.” I love classic styles—rock, pop, classical—and I always make sure the lyrics have a deep connection with the music. It’s about creating a cohesive emotional experience.

How does AI change the “human” part of your songwriting?

AI is my orchestra, but I am the conductor. It allows me to explore sounds that I couldn’t reach before, but every emotion, every word, and every structural decision comes from my human experience. It’s a hybrid collaboration that makes my music possible.

Do you have any hobbies outside of music? What do you do to stay creative?

I’m a total tech enthusiast. I love video games, video editing, and even programming my own simple games to experiment. It’s a playground for my brain.

I treat creativity like a muscle. I keep it sharp by constantly “making” things—whether it’s code, visuals, or new melodies—even if it’s just for my own consumption.

Who are some of your main musical influences?

I have a very diverse musical upbringing. My parents played everything from Queen, George Michael, and Pink Floyd to Dire Straits and Deep Purple. But the real game-changer for me was discovering Nirvana in my early teens—that raw energy had a massive impact on my creative DNA.

What’s one of the proudest moments of your music career so far?

Without a doubt, the moment I realized that, thanks to AI, I could finally hear the melodies and lyrics that had been locked in my head for decades. It was an incredibly emotional moment, like a dream finally becoming reality.

What would you say are the greatest lessons that you’ve learned so far?

I’ve learned that the tool doesn’t define the artist; the vision does. It doesn’t matter whether you use a guitar or AI — what matters is having something honest to say. Also, patience is key—even with technology, finding the “perfect” sound takes time and heart.

Now onto your release, “Words.” What inspired this song? What is “Words” about?

“Words” came from a place of creative exhaustion. After months of non-stop writing and producing, I felt saturated. I realized that sometimes, when you need to rest but your mind won’t stop, the words just don’t come easy. It’s a song about that struggle.

What was the inspiration behind the cover artwork for “Words?”

It was a sudden mental image: a turquoise clay “W” resting on a music sheet. I like to trust those first flashes of inspiration for my artwork and try to capture them exactly as they appear in my mind.

What was the creative process like when making “Words?”

I was feeling creatively saturated when I wrote “Words,” but I refused to stop. The lyrics explore that delicate point where inspiration meets exhaustion. It all started with the simple opening melody you hear at the beginning; from there, I gradually layered and shaped the sound until it matched the vision in my head.

How long did it take to complete “Words?”

The lyrics took a few days. I usually write first in my native languages, Catalan or Spanish, and then I spend time translating and adapting them into English to ensure the soul of the message remains intact. The music, however, took several weeks; I had a very specific sound in mind and I wouldn’t stop until the production perfectly matched my mental vision.

What is your favorite lyric in “Words” and why?

“Lights inside my head! Voices in my ear! Chaos to unravel! Making it all clear! Pain inside the heart! Passion in the soul! Keeping under cover! Fighting for control!” It perfectly captures the mental noise and the “beautiful chaos” of the creative process.

What do you hope fans take away from “Words” and your music in general?

I want listeners to experience my songs in two distinct ways. First, I hope they dive into the composition and discover the specific message hidden in each track. But at the same time, I want them to just let their imagination fly with the melodies. My goal is to provide both a narrative to follow and a soundscape where they can lose themselves and dream.

What’s next for you? Are you working on any upcoming projects, or do you have any upcoming shows that we should be on the lookout for?

On March 19th, I’m releasing a new single called “You”—a melody I actually composed 30 years ago! I’m also putting the finishing touches on my new album, which will include “Words” and “You.” The project is still growing.

Before you go, let’s ask an off-topic question. Do you play any sports, and which one is your favorite?

I’m a bit “rusty” these days, so I don’t play as much as I used to! But, I am deeply passionate about football and rugby. I played both for many years, from my teens well into my adult life. Nowadays, I’ve moved from the field to the stands; I find that watching a good match is one of the best ways to relax and clear my head after a long day of composing.
