Liatris is a two-piece pop band based in Merseyside, UK. Consisting of vocalist and lyricist Amelia Brooke, and drummer and producer Devon Eyres.

With their debut single, “The Waves,” out now, we took some time to hear from Liatris. Read below to learn more about Liatris, the story behind “The Waves,” and what’s to come.

Hi! Let’s start with how did the band’s name come about?

Amelia: I wouldn’t say there’s any intense lore behind the name. A “Liatris” is a purple flower also called a blazing star, and Devon’s favourite colour is purple, and I love stars, so it was definitely a mutual decision.

What city are you both from, and where are you both based now?

Amelia: I live in Liverpool, and I still live there now.

Devon: I’m from the Wirral and still live there.

How and when did this duo form?

Amelia: We actually only met about 7 months ago, but I feel like we were definitely meant to meet each other as I’m currently doing a level music and Devon is doing a degree in music production, so our mutual friend introduced us, and we clicked immediately (Shout out Mason).

How would you both describe your band’s sound?

Amelia: I’d say we are very synth pop sounding; however, every song that we write is still unique and stands out from one another.

Devon: I think for now I’d describe it as synth pop, but there’s some songs we’re working on that sound the complete opposite.

Who are some of your group’s main musical influences?

Amelia: I think for me it’s definitely Conan Gray and Chloe Moriondo as their voices and lyrics really inspire me.

Devon: My main influence is definitely Twenty One Pilots, I learned how to produce music through remaking their songs, and their methods of composition and production have stuck with me in what I create. I also really look up to MARINA, her storytelling through music is incredible, as well as her unique sound.

Which artist or group would you all love to be an opening act for?

Amelia: My dream artist to open for would be Conan Gray as his songs have helped me at my lowest and has inspired me so much in song writing.

Devon: Definitely Twenty One Pilots, they’ve been my favourite band for almost 10 years now, I’ve really grown up with them.

What would be your group’s dream venue to play?

Amelia: My dream venue to play at is definitely the Apollo in Manchester as it’s such a nice venue with a wonderful environment and was the first time I was able to see Conan Gray.

Devon: I’d love to play a festival of some sort. Most likely Sound City in Liverpool as the local bands are so amazing.

What’s one of the proudest moments of your group’s music career so far?

Amelia: I think the proudest moment for us was releasing “The Waves,” as we worked so hard on it and hearing everyone talk about how much they loved it was just an amazing feeling.

Devon: Definitely when we played our first show, it was really weird. Honestly, it’s all we’ve been talking about since.

What would you both say are the greatest lessons that you both have learned so far?

Amelia: I think the greatest lesson that we’ve learned so far is that in order to make a good song, you have to work together and be able to take constructive criticism from each other.

Devon: Probably to learn to take constructive criticism, as well as the fact that not everyone is going to like it.

Now onto “The Waves.” What inspired this song?

Amelia: I think the passage of time was a really big inspiration for “The Waves.”

What is “The Waves” about?

Amelia: It’s about wanting to do all the things that you’ve wanted to do before time catches up to you.

What was the inspiration behind the cover artwork for “The Waves?”

Devon: I’m not really sure. I remember listening to the demo version of the song and envisioning what I wanted the cover to look like, it just came to me in a way. My girlfriend actually painted it herself. I feel bad to be honest because I just waffled about what I was envisioning, but she did an incredible job with it.

What was the creative process like when making “The Waves?”

Amelia: For me, it was playing around with lyrics until I finally found lyrics that I could resonate with and write a song about.

Devon: It was so much fun, I remember I was fixated on detuned chords for a while and tried to figure out how to do it. I didn’t get the result that I was going for at all, but that’s how we ended up with the instrumental.

How long did it take to complete “The Waves?”

Amelia: I’d say it took us about 6 months from start to finish.

What do you both hope fans take away from “The Waves” and your duo’s music in general?

Amelia: I hope that people can feel comfort in our songs, and from “The Waves,” we want people to know that you shouldn’t be afraid to live and make a name for yourself.

Devon: I just hope what we create resonates with people.

What’s next? Are you all working on any upcoming projects, or do you all have any upcoming shows that we should be on the lookout for?

Amelia: We are working on an upcoming album called Estuary, which has just been so much fun to make together. We have a show coming up on the 7th August, and we will definitely have plenty more planned for the future!

Devon: We also should have another single coming out soon, so watch out for that.
