Cheryl Craigie is an independent singer-songwriter and musician. Singing since childhood, her passion for composing original music has blossomed in recent years. Her original songs evoke powerful emotions about love and life. To date, she has co-produced nine songs with Eric Goldberg, including three originals. With “What’s Going On” out now, we took some time to hear from Cheryl Craigie. Read below to learn more about Cheryl Craigie, the story behind “What’s Going On,” and what’s to come.

Hi Cheryl Craigie! Let’s start with how did you choose your stage name?

My stage name is actually my real name. I decided to keep it because it feels authentic to who I am. I want people to connect with me as myself, and using my real name helps build a genuine, consistent identity both personally and professionally.

What city are you from, and where are you based now?

I grew up in Arlington, Massachusetts and now reside in Woburn, Massachusetts.

At what point in your life did you decide to pursue a career in music? How did you get started?

I knew from a young age that music was something that I loved but never pursued it until later in my life.  I have such fond memories of singing around the piano with my father.  He was a graduate of the New England Conservatory and was the one who introduced me to music.  Those precious times left an everlasting impact on my life. 

How would you describe your sound?

I like to describe my sound as eclectic.  My sound is constantly evolving, but it’s rooted in authenticity. I focus on meaningful lyrics, strong melodies, and creating music that reflects my experiences.

Do you have any hobbies outside of music? What do you do to stay creative?

Yes!  I love to cook.  Like music, it lets me be creative and I find it relaxing.

Who are some of your main musical influences?

Some of my biggest musical influences come from Motown and classic soul. I really admire artists like Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Smokey Robinson, and Aretha Franklin. I love the storytelling in their lyrics and the way their music connects with people. Those artists have really influenced how I think about music.

What’s one of the proudest moments of your music career so far?

That would have to be writing and releasing my first original song. Seeing an idea grow into a finished track that people could listen to was incredibly rewarding. It gave me confidence as a songwriter and showed me that I could create music from my life experiences that others could enjoy and relate to. 

What would you say are the greatest lessons that you’ve learned so far?

That’s a tough one as there are so many!  One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned so far is to believe in myself and keep creating, even when it feels challenging. Writing and releasing my first original song taught me that growth comes from taking chances.  Growing as a musician takes time and every challenge is an opportunity to learn more.

Now onto “What’s Going On.” What prompted you to make this cover song?

“What’s Going On” is one of those rare songs that remains just as relevant today as when it was first released, Its message of understanding, compassion, and concern for one another transcends generations. I wanted to record a version that honors Marvin Gaye’s masterpiece while sharing those sentiments in my own voice. My hope is that listeners will connect with the song’s message and find inspiration in its call for unity and kindness.

How does your version differ from the original?

The original is such an iconic song, so my goal wasn’t to copy Marvin Gaye but to honor it while bringing my own voice and style to it. I focused on making the performance feel authentic to me, while still respecting the emotion and message of the song.

What was the inspiration behind the cover artwork for “What’s Going On?”

I chose a peace sign because it’s a universal symbol of unity and compassion, which fits the message of “What’s Going On”.  The song encourages people to come together, listen to one another, and work toward a more peaceful world, and I wanted the artwork to reflect those themes.

What was the creative process like when making “What’s Going On?”

My goal was to create a version that paid tribute to Marvin Gaye while allowing my own personality and musical style to come through.

How long did it take to complete “What’s Going On?”

It took me a few months to complete. I wanted to take my time because “What’s Going On” is such an iconic song. I spent that time developing my own interpretation, refining the vocals, and making sure every part of the performance felt authentic. I didn’t want to rush the process.  I wanted to create a version that honored the original while still reflecting who I am as an artist.

What do you hope fans take away from your music?

I hope people come away feeling something genuine. Whether it’s hope, comfort, or inspiration, I want my music to connect with people on an emotional level. If someone hears one of my songs and feels understood or encouraged, then I’ve done what I set out to do.

Throughout your catalog, from originals like “Migraine,” “Soft Place to Fall,” and “Martini Morning” to your latest cover, meaningful storytelling seems to be a common thread. Why is it important for you to create music that encourages reflection and emotional connection?

I think people all over the world experience life through music.  If they can make a connection to what you’re singing about it really resonates with them. I hope my original compositions and covers alike bring people strength, hope and reflection in life’s challenges and triumphs.

What’s next? Are you working on any upcoming projects, or do you have any upcoming shows that we should be on the lookout for?

Right now, I’m working on another original song and another cover. I’m excited to keep creating, building my catalog, and sharing more music with people. I’m looking forward to continuing to grow as an artist and seeing where this journey takes me.
