Brynn Hulls is one of Newcastle’s brightest upcoming singer-songwriters and producers, carrying a musical legacy ingrained in her family’s history . With a penchant for versatility, Brynn Hulls has explored many genres, incorporating elements along the way to forge her distinctive sound. Heavily influenced by the often melancholic depths of artists such as Lana Del Rey , Jeff Buckley , Frank Ocean, and Elliott Smith, her music combines elements of Indie, R&B, Pop, and Folk.

Hi Brynn Hulls! Let’s start with how did you get your artist name?

Brynn Hulls is actually my given first and last name, I was named after my grandfather who was also a singer which is a cool coincidence, I can’t think of anything better to represent me because I’m very proud to be named after him.

What city are you from and where are you based now?

I’m from a coastal city called Newcastle, it’s located in New South Wales, Australia. I was born here and have lived here my whole life so far, it’s just a short trip to Sydney, so I go there to sing quite frequently.

At what point in your life did you decide to pursue a career in music? How did you get started?

I have always known that this is what I wanted to do, I used to write songs in my childhood bedroom and protect them like they were gold, I never wanted anyone to read them, haha! Then I went to university for music and learnt to produce, after that is when I decided to start releasing my work.

How would you describe your sound to readers who may not be familiar with you?

My sound is definitely an amalgamation of many that have inspired me over time. I like to think that I take the honest and raw poetry-like songwriting of Folk, the warm layered vocals of RnB and the likability of Pop and this is what I have ended up with. Something that’s cool about my music is most people aren’t really able to place it to being overly similar to one specific artist, so it’s nice to know that I have a unique sound.

Do you have any hobbies outside of music? What do you do to stay creative?

Music is definitely my main creative outlet, but I have also been obsessed with fashion forever. If you saw my wardrobe, you’d definitely classify it as a hobby.

Who are some of your main musical influences?

Some of my main musical influences are Lana Del Rey, Jeff Buckley, Thom Yorke, Sadè, Frank Ocean, Elliot Smith and definitely a million more.

What’s one of the proudest moments of your music career so far?

I think that I’m just proud to be sharing the work, that gratification from external experiences or achievements will come in the future, but right now I’m just proud to be doing this at all.

What would you say are the greatest lessons that you’ve learned so far?

Not to be too precious, about myself or the work. People will have opinions about you always and you’re never going to be for everyone’s palette, so you just need to make yourself happy.

Now onto your release, ‘Skies in January.’ What inspired this song? What is ‘Skies in January’ about?

This song was inspired by the provocative film, Saltburn. I loved it immediately as I watched it. It explores the inner lives of young affluent people and so does ‘Skies in January.’ It’s a song that questions if everything is as good as it seems.

What was the creative process like when making ‘Skies in January?’ How long did it take to complete ‘Skies in January?’

I wasn’t really in a rush to complete this one, it kind of slowly developed over a few months. I gave myself plenty of time to try out different sounds and be selective. I’m really happy with the overall sonic feel of the song. Specifically the beat took quite some time to solidify, I wanted a bossa groove, but it had to still feel modern.

What is your favorite lyric in ‘Skies in January’ and why?

I think my favorite lyric is ‘lay your head in a field of forget me nots’ – it’s a bit of a double entendre. It alludes to the need to forget things that you remember, but also a ‘forget me not’ is a type of flower.

What message do you hope fans take away from your music and from ‘Skies in January?’

My music is always intended to inspire deeper reflection and thought, if people take 2-3 mins to listen to the lyrics and think about what it means that would be all I could ask for.

What’s next for you? Are you working on any upcoming projects, or do you have any upcoming shows that we should be on the lookout for?

I have another song coming out very soon, it will be out end of August/early September, more on that will be announced on my socials…
