Following a three-year hiatus, Canadian rapper mASCOT returned with a bang with “TRIFECTA.” The maxi single was met with acclaim. The rising star is back and kicks off Q4 with a new EP, Happy Days. The five-track EP is chock-full of bops that are fun-loving and lively, but the EP also has anthems that are palpable and melancholic; thus, making the EP captivatingly perfect for all listeners.
Happy Days starts off with a bouncy, upbeat jam, “Superset.” The song features renowned female rapper Amiccella. mASCOT shows off his unique, old-school-meets-new-school flow. Track two, “Egg & Avocado,” is a tongue-in-cheek record with tropical sounds. The song’s lyrical and thematic concept/wordplay are reminiscent of the musical styles of artists like Afroman and Lil Dicky.
Track three, “Bad B*tches,” marks a shift in the EP’s vibe. The song has a Pop Rap sound with EDM flair; however, the song has a pointed, deep message that tackles issues, such as self-worth and self-love. The penultimate track, “Suicide,” continues with the darker, introspective/extrospective theme. The song has a wavy sound and closes with a Christian, hopeful message that deters the irreversible act. “Airplane Mode” closes out the EP in a positive manner. The eclectic song has angelic, choral sounds and urges listeners to persevere, chase dreams, and keep on keeping on.
Happy Days is overall an optimistic body of work. It encapsulates what it means to be alive. “Life is not always joyful and bright, and this EP is meant to compliment both aspects,” mASCOT states. Happy Days is a taste of what mASCOT has in store. You will be happy that you pressed play on Happy Days.
