Hi Floss Jordan! Let’s start with how did you get your artist name?
Hi Meikhel! Thank you for the interview, and your support and interest in my music! My artist name, Floss, was a nickname from my mum, and Jordan is my first name.
What city are you from and where are you based now?
I am from Plymouth in Devon, and I am now based in London.
At what point in your life did you decide to pursue a career in music? How did you get started?
I always loved music from a young age, I studied the clarinet and piano, and sang in the choir at school. I loved choreographing dance routines to my favourite songs.
I decided to focus on my dance career, I started working as a professional dancer, dancing in music videos, commercials, live shows and fashion shows. I then started writing my own music for fun around the time that I was a backing dancer for artists like Charli XCX and Years & Years. I was a bit shy when it came to singing, I was always interested in music production and while I was working as a commercial dancer in London, I enrolled to study a degree in music production at BIMM London. I started building a catalogue of songs, I released my first song in 2020 called Kings & Queens.
Has your upbringing played a role in shaping who you are and defining your sound today? If so, how?
My family have always been really supportive, I was lucky to get to go to dance and music classes. The arts is a tough industry, I’m very grateful to everyone who has encouraged and supported me on my creative journey.
I love dance, art, film, fashion as well as music, I feel all these art forms contribute and help shape my artistry, writing and production style. I love classical music as well as electronic dance music. I love all kinds of music!
How would you describe your sound to readers who may not be familiar with you?
Some of my music is ethereal and cinematic, other tracks are more electronic and alternative. My music has been described as genre-defying, I like to take influence from many different musical genres and experiment with my vocal production.
Do you have any hobbies outside of music? What do you do to stay creative?
I love going to art galleries and exhibitions. I love swimming, reading, film and spending time with my partner, friends and family. I also play badminton with friends, I love the outdoors and going on long walks/hikes.
Who are some of your main musical influences?
I am a big fan of Charli XCX, Christine and the Queens, Florence + The Machine and The Weeknd. Also, Björk, Kate Bush, Banks, Queen and Prince.
What are some of your future music career goals?
I am looking forward to releasing my first album and performing my music live. I am also a DJ and I would love to create my own dance remixes of my songs.
What’s one of the proudest moments of your music career so far?
Hearing my music on BBC Introducing and BBC Radio 5 Live was a very special and amazing moment. Also, reading the comments about my music from fans, which is their favourite song that I’ve released so far, it’s an amazing moment to hear peoples feedback and which songs they like best.
What would you say are the greatest lessons that you’ve learned so far?
One of my biggest lessons has been to stay true to who I am as an artist and why I started making music in the first place. Sometimes this can get lost along the journey. However, I feel like I’m on the right path and I’m very much enjoying getting my music out there and hope people enjoy my music.
Now onto your release, ‘Midas.’ What inspired this song?
This song was inspired by the Greek myth of Midas. I wrote this track with two other writers, JD Donovan and Lisa Sanchez. I was interested in Midas’s story and his ability to turn everything he touched into gold. We re-worked the story with the idea that Midas couldn’t turn his next ‘crush’ into gold.
What is ‘Midas’ about?
My song ‘Midas’ tells a story about Midas and his manipulative and narcissistic traits, he has a few lovers, however, he cannot seem to turn his latest ‘crush’ into gold, she symbolises the river Pactolus.
What is your favorite lyric in ‘Midas’ and why?
The second verse:
I don’t turn to gold
Seems I’m the river that saves your mortal soul
The crowns that you own
They cannot satisfy the hunger below
How will you break the mould?
I feel this is the moment in the song where Midas’s ‘crush’ challenges his values, but it is also a positive encounter, as she wants to help him, hoping he will see things from another perspective and reflect on his actions. The River Pactolus in the Greek myth washes away Midas’s ‘golden touch,’ a curse that turned everything he touched into gold.
What message do you hope fans take away from your music and from ‘Midas?’
My message to my fans is to believe in yourself and follow your dreams. I have been told by some fans that ‘Midas’ gives them that confidence, that ‘main character’ energy. It also reminds us ‘all that glitters isn’t gold.’
What’s next for you? Are you working on any upcoming projects, or do you have any upcoming shows that we should be on the lookout for?
I have many more releases this year, which I am so excited to share with you! I am releasing a new track on the 9th May! Live sets are on the horizon too!
