With “Too Late to Change” out now, we took some time to hear from Fire In Her Eyes. Read below to learn more about Fire In Her Eyes, the story behind “Too Late to Change,” and what’s to come.
Hi! How did the groups name come about?
The name, Fire In Her Eyes, originated in primary school when Daniella and co-founder Gabrielle (who later left the band) wrote a song with the phrase in it. Years later, while working on an art project centred on a painting of eyes, Daniella was inspired to name the band Fire In Her Eyes.
What city are you both from, and where are you both based now?
We are both from North West London and both still live here now.
How and when did the duo form?
We officially formed as a duo in 2021 after the original trio had broken up. Summer 2021, we had to quickly prepare a new duo set for Beardy Folk Festival in 3 days, developing a more folk-inspired, fingerpicked guitar style for the show.
How would you both describe your duo’s sound to readers who may not be familiar with you?
As a duo, we would describe our sound as Psychedelic folk with rich harmonies. When performing as a full seven-piece band, the sound expands with added influences and textures, taking on a rockier edge with organ, drums, and more layered instrumentation.
How has your sound evolved since your first gig?
Since our first gig, we’ve evolved a lot. Back then, I wrote solely on keys while Natasha played drums, debuting our first gig setup at A Star of Kings in King’s Cross. Today, our full seven piece lineup has a much richer, more dynamic sound featuring drums, guitars, organ/keys, bass, sitar, synth, etc. This adds depth, texture, and complexity to our music and the journey of the performance.
What’s a random place or situation that’s inspired one of your songs?
When we went travelling as a trio in India 2019, we found ourselves in a musical instrument shop jamming with the owners. We ended up missing our flight to Goa that day and as result wrote a song called ‘We Don’t Make Plans.’
Who are some of your group’s main influences?
Nick Drake, Jefferson Airplane, Fleetwood Mac, Crosby Stills & Nash, Soft Machine, Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, King Crimson, Sweet Smoke, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Caravan, Camel, The Strawbs, Pink Floyd, Magna Carta, Focus, The Beatles, Joni Mitchell, Jethro Tull, Renaissance, Tame Impala, George Duke, Hermeto Pascoal, and Gentle Giant.
What’s one of the proudest moments of your groups music career so far?
Two moments spring to mind in particular:
The first would be getting our very first radio interview and airplay on Radio 1 with our first single, ‘Presenting,’ in 2019.
Another key memory was playing at the Leighton House Museum where Jimmy Page came to watch and loved the show.
What would you both say are the greatest lessons that you two learned so far?
Practice makes perfect.
Less can be more (musically).
Now onto ‘Too Late to Change’. What inspired the song?
While in Tenerife, we were songwriting, writing daily overlooking the ocean, which inspired us to use the sea as a metaphor in the lyrics. Natasha suggested to me (Daniella) the concept of something being ‘too far gone,’ a point where something or a relationship no longer serves its purpose. We aimed to create a simple, few chord song that was easy for listeners to connect with and sing along to.
What is ‘Too Late to Change’ about?
‘Too Late to Change’ is about a relationship or situation that has come to an end and even though you’d somehow want to make it work, it’s already beyond repair.
What was the creative process like when making ‘Too Late to Change?’
Once the concept was set, I (Daniella) began playing the main guitar chords and singing the hook, ‘Is it too late to change, is it too late?’ The song came together quickly, inspired and spontaneous. When we later revisited the Tenerife tracks, we realized its catchiness made it the perfect choice for the album’s first single.
How long did it take to complete ‘Too Late to Change?’
The main idea of ‘Too Late to Change’ took around half an hour to fully complete the 1st draft of the track without other instruments.
What message or messages do you hope fans take away from ‘Too Late to Change’ and your group’s music in general?
We hope listeners connect with the song and feel inspired to let go of the past and what no longer serves them. Our goal is to bring light, hope and positivity to people through our music.
What’s next for you all? Are you working on any upcoming projects, or do you all have any upcoming shows that we should be on the lookout for?
Next up, we have our second single from the album, ‘He Cries,’ which will be out everywhere this November. Then, next February, we plan to release our debut album, Look into the Sky, produced by Youth.
