With “NGA MIHI” out now, we took some time to hear from DeHusslar Music. Read below to learn more about DeHusslar Music, the story behind “NGA MIHI,” and what’s to come.
Hi DeHusslar Music! Let’s start with how did you get your artist name?
I just came up with it like ten years ago, but never got around to bringing it too life until last year. I didn’t know what type of music it was going to be under, but we are here now and Festival Music is the genre.
What city are you from and where are you based now?
I am from New Zealand, Aotearoa. The land of the long white cloud. City, I am in the City of Sail which is Auckland City.
At what point in your life did you decide to pursue a career in music? How did you get started?
I started out as a teen breakdancing and freestyling and then met a guy at work, Nathan (R.I.P.), whose brother Robsta was in a New Zealand Legendary Hip Hop crew group called DAM NATIVE. I pretty much learnt the Rap game under that umbrella. I eventually formed my own lil crew, No Artificial Flavours, and got signed to Machaventa Records under EMI at the time. We were more Hip-Hop focused. I personally made alot of mistakes and learnt alot from that experience. I had to step away from the scene to be able to develop and see where I was going as a artist. I started attending festivals on the regular and slowly started developing an ear for certain sounds and reading crowds energies. I turned that into a research and development exercise. Fast forward to 2024, and I’m standing at Splore Festival at 4 AM looking at the sky and said to myself, ‘this is it.’ I’m going to start making music for festivals only. I want to play at festivals, but only play original music.
How would you describe your sound to readers who may not be familiar with you?
I say I make Festival Music for Festival crowds. Lots of roller coaster moments and switch ups to keep your brain and body moving in celebration of living life in that moment.
Who are some of your main musical influences?
I’m a big fan of old school funk and pimp music, but New Zealand wise in this type of music Salmonella Dub, Trinity Roots, The Mighty Shapeshifter, Concord dawn, Mt Eden Dubstep.
What’s one of the proudest moments of your music career so far?
I’ve been quite fortunate to have a couple crazy moments, There is a Band in NZ called Blind Spott and when Linkin Park first came to NZ, I was a guest MC to perform with Blind Spott as an Opening Act.
Actually developing DEHUSSLAR MUSIC and bringing that to life on my own is pretty massive to me. I dropped my debut EP May 9th 2025. I didn’t even know how to play one chord, so I had to teach myself alot. The fact that I did it is a moment for me personally.
What would you say are the greatest lessons that you’ve learned so far?
How to be grateful and truly be grateful 100%. This one word and everything it means to actually BE GRATEFUL is everything to me. Every breath is a gift, every new day that I get the luxury to live another day is everything to me.
Now onto your release, ‘NGA MIHI.’ What inspired this song?
This was me testing myself to fully transcend into a 2 AM Festival sound producer. Making a tune that has all the elements of a sound journey with fat bass drops, builds up, have a quiet sip of your drink before the drop in a dub step mentality while at the same time giving back to the festivals that I’ve attended and thanking those moments that let me create this song.
What was the creative process like when making ‘NGA MIHI?’
The overall idea was to create a comforting opening sound take would make the crowd feel safe and comfortable, and then lead them into a build up before throwing them in a world of bass and crazy sounds that catch them off guard as it all blends into a magical dubstep heavenly experience that just keeps the crowd moving and most importantly keeps them not knowing what’s going to happen next.
How long did it take to complete ‘NGA MIHI?’
I created this in a couple hours. It just kinda happened and flowed so naturally it was about 2 AM I remember and by 4:30 AM, I was having a solo mosh pit by myself celebrating, haha.
What do you hope fans take away from your music and from ‘NGA MIHI?’
That it takes them on an unknown journey to a place they have never been before.
What’s next for you? Are you working on any upcoming projects, or do you have any upcoming shows that we should be on the lookout for?
I’m trying to drop my album, WATERMELON & DICK, in July, August the latest.
Where can we follow you on social media?
DeHusslar Music on all platforms.
Before you go, let’s ask you something random. What star sign and life path number are you?
I’m an Aquarius and Life Path number 11.
