With her single, “Dream,” out now, we took some time to hear from Daisy Gill. Read below to learn more about Daisy Gill, the story behind her latest single, and what’s to come.
Hi Daisy Gill! Let’s start with how did you get your artist name?
My artist name is my birth name, I just never felt the need to change it. My middle name is Belle, so there was times that I was going to change it to Daisy Belle, but I just felt like Daisy Gill suited me best.
What city are you from and where are you based now?
I am from Liverpool, UK, and I am still based here in Liverpool.
At what point in your life did you decide to pursue a career in music? How did you get started?
I always loved music growing up, all I ever wanted to be was a singer. As I grew older, I started writing my own songs and that’s when I realised that I wanted to make this my career one day. I started out singing in pubs and clubs from a young age, and then went on to learn how to produce music and that’s when the journey truly began for me.
Has your upbringing played a role in shaping who you are and defining your sound today? If so, how?
Growing up my mum LOVED music. Cleaning the house, she would play music. In the car, she had her CD’s playing or tapes back then. From a young age, all I remember was music and the joy that brought. My mum would listen to a range of things from Kate Bush to Fleetwood Mac, she loved disco and Motown. She had Dance tracks from the early 90’s and 00’s. We had a collection of different tunes playing as a kid. I think that has influenced me to try and merge different sounds and genres as I love so many different types of music.
How would you describe your sound to readers who may not be familiar with you?
My sound is what I call retro pop. I make predominantly pop music, but I always try and make it have retro influence whether that be through synth or live instrumentation, it depends. I feel like my sound can vary as I always try and make music that can take you to the headspace that I was in when I wrote it and that has to be reflected in the music itself.
Do you have any hobbies outside of music? What do you do to stay creative?
I love colouring in, I find it so therapeutic. I remember living in my old flat and not having a TV, so I had all these colouring in books and would sit for hours just colouring. I feel like oddly colouring in is creative within its self.
Who are some of your main musical influences?
I would definitely say Paloma Faith, RAYE and Jessie Ware.
What are some of your future music career goals?
I would really love to go on tour one day or even be a support act for another band or artist.
What’s one of the proudest moments of your music career so far?
I would have to say getting a 4 chair turn on The Voice UK. That was the most surreal experience that I’ve had so far.
What would you say are the greatest lessons that you’ve learned so far?
To be patient, enjoy the journey – it’s a marathon, not a sprint. Also, things aren’t always going to go your way, but it’s okay, life is full of twists and turns, but you will get back on track and you will grow from it.
Now onto your release, ‘Dream.’ What inspired this song?
I have always had very prophetic and vivid dreams from a young child. At times, it disturbed me, but I felt compelled to write about it as I found it an interesting topic and also everybody has experienced strange dreams to some degree.
What is ‘Dream’ about?
‘Dream’ is inspired by my experience with lucid dreaming and sleep paralysis. It explores that strange middle ground between being awake and asleep; where your mind is active, but your body feels stuck. It’s about the contrast between fear and freedom in those dreamlike states. It’s about escaping into fantasy, but also confronting what you find there.
What is your favorite lyric in ‘Dream’ and why?
I feel like the opening verse of ‘I can’t hear a single word you say, your mouth is moving but I cannot hear you but I don’t wanna have to go away, you know I saw you just the other day you were talking about how I was a stranger but you know it doesn’t have to be that way’ is my favourite part of the song because it really encapsulates that feeling of panic when you’re in a dream and nothing is making sense, but you don’t want to leave because although it’s weird and strange, there is comfort in the experience because something about it or the people you’re interacting with in your dream feel familiar.
What message do you hope fans take away from your music and from ‘Dream?’
I hope fans feel seen and understood through my music. With ‘Dream,’ I wanted to show that even the strangest, most vulnerable parts of our minds like lucid dreams or sleep paralysis can be turned into something beautiful and powerful. It’s okay to feel stuck or overwhelmed sometimes, but there’s always a way to move through it and turn it into something freeing. I want people to feel like they can escape, express, and heal through the music.
What’s next for you? Are you working on any upcoming projects, or do you have any upcoming shows that we should be on the lookout for?
I have a few cool projects coming up, some I’m unsure if I can announce yet. But, I am most definitely working on new music, and I am super excited for what’s to come next.
Where can we follow you on social media?
@daisygillmusic on all platforms 🙂
Before you go, let’s ask you something random. What is your favorite food?
My favourite food will always be Chinese food. No matter where I go to in the world, I will go to a Chinese restaurant, and I feel like my trip is a flop if I haven’t been to a Chinese restaurant.
Thank you for the great interview; wish you much continued success!
