Ashley Mora mixes raw emotion with a bit of attitude, creating a sound that feels personal and real. Her music has an unfiltered honesty, like overhearing a late-night conversation with yourself, combined with the messy magic of just being you. She found her voice in quiet moments—those late-night thoughts and journal entries that turned into songs. Self-taught on piano and diving into songwriting, Ashley Mora rebuilt herself from the inside out.
Her debut single, “Tease,” isn’t just an intro—it’s an invite into her world. Think reflections, cherries, glossy lips, and moments that stick around a little longer than expected.
With her debut single, “Tease,” out now, we took some time to hear from Ashley Mora. Read below to learn more about Ashley Mora, the story behind “Tease,” and what’s to come.
Hi Ashley Mora! Let’s start with how did you get your artist name?
Hahaha this one’s easy — it’s just my real name! I really wanted to stay true to myself from the start, and using my name felt like the most honest way to do that.
What city are you from and where are you based now?
I’m from Lakeland, Florida. I moved to Tampa for a bit during college, but right now, I’m back in Lakeland. It’s home, and it’s been a grounding place to return to while I focus on my music.
At what point in your life did you decide to pursue a career in music? How did you get started?
Deep down, I’ve always known that I wanted to pursue music, but it wasn’t until college that I really started believing that I could. I’ve been writing songs in my journal since I was about seven — it was just my way of processing everything that I felt. I used to sing karaoke with my best friend and even wrote little songs with her for fun.
I got my first guitar at nine, but it started to hit me in high school when a close friend gifted me my first keyboard that everything started to shift. Teaching myself to play became my escape, especially during some of the tougher moments in college. That’s really when I started to realize music wasn’t just a hobby — it was something that I needed. And from there, I knew I had to follow it.
Has your upbringing played a role in shaping who you are and defining your sound today? If so, how?
It definitely did— my upbringing has shaped who I am and how I make music. Growing up in Florida, I spent a lot of time outside by the water, soaking up the sun and around that carefree, beachy energy. I’ve always been drawn to fun, free-spirited music because of that. At the same time, my dad constantly played classic rock around the house, so I naturally developed a love for electric guitars and deep, gritty basslines. And being Latina, music that moves you — that makes you want to dance or feel something deeply — has always been part of my world.
So for me, it’s all about blending those pieces: sunny and bold, emotional and energetic. I like taking the best of what I grew up with and turning it into something that feels like me.
How would you describe your sound to readers who may not be familiar with you?
I’d describe my sound as moody pop — emotional at its core but layered with fun, dynamic instrumentals that bring the lyrics to life. It’s like if your late-night thoughts had a soundtrack that made you feel powerful instead of weighed down. I love building contrast in my music — pairing vulnerable lyrics with confident energy to create something that feels honest, bold, and a little addictive.
Do you have any hobbies outside of music? What do you do to stay creative?
Yes! I actually did competitive gymnastics for twelve years, so movement has always been a big part of my life — even now, I still channel that energy into things like Pilates (which lowkey still makes me feel like an athlete, haha). I love staying active, whether it’s swimming, playing tennis, pickleball, or a casual soccer game.
Outside of that, painting is one of my favorite creative outlets. I’m not much of a sketcher, but give me a paintbrush and an easel, and I’m in my happy place.
To stay inspired creatively, I love being by the water. Something about being outside just clears my head and opens me up to new ideas. I’ll jot down lyrics or concepts in my notes app, and sometimes even a random moment from a show that I’m watching sparks something. Creativity really finds me in the little things.
Who are some of your main musical influences?
In the pop world, I’d say my biggest female influences are Sabrina Carpenter and Tate McRae — I love how they blend emotion, honesty, and a little playfulness into their music. On the male side, definitely Harry Styles and Khalid. They both have such distinct styles and emotional depth that really inspire me.
Outside of pop, I draw from a mix of genres. I’ve always loved the raw energy of bands like Guns N’ Roses, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Backseat Lovers, and Dominic Fike, and the vibe-driven sound of artists like Don Toliver. That mix of rock, alt, and R&B definitely shows up in how I build my sound.
And of course, as a Latina, I grew up on artists like Bad Bunny and Aventura. That rhythm, passion, and emotional delivery has always stuck with me — it’s music that makes you feel something in your body and your heart, and I try to carry a bit of that in what I create.
What’s one of the proudest moments of your music career so far?
One of the proudest moments for me was flying to New York City to record my first official song. I recorded in a studio where so many iconic artists have worked — it felt unreal just being in that space. But what made it even more meaningful was that I surprised two of my closest friends with the whole experience. They thought we were in NYC for something else, and then I brought them into the studio with me. Sharing that moment — my first big step as an artist — with people who’ve supported me from the start was honestly so special.
What would you say are the greatest lessons that you’ve learned so far?
One of the biggest lessons that I’ve learned is how important it is to truly love yourself and take the time to figure out who you are. If you don’t know what brings you joy or how to advocate for your own peace, it’s hard to expect anyone else to do that for you.
I’ve also learned that it’s okay to love people from a distance — and even to let them go. That doesn’t mean the love wasn’t real; it just means you’re honoring your worth and choosing yourself. Sometimes the strongest thing that you can do is sit with yourself and realize that your value isn’t defined by someone else staying. Letting go isn’t a reflection of being ‘not enough’ — it’s a reflection of growth.
Now onto your release, ‘Tease.’ What inspired this song? What is ‘Tease’ about?
Haha, honestly, a big part of the inspiration for ‘Tease’ came from one of my close friends and a situation she was in with this guy who kept stringing her along. I adore her, and I remember how frustrating it was to watch her go through that constant state of almost — where someone gives you just enough to keep you around, but never enough to feel secure.
I wanted to turn that feeling into a song — something that captured the emotional whiplash of being stuck in that in-between. It’s playful and confident on the surface, but underneath, it speaks to a feeling that I think so many of us have experienced in some way. Whether it’s in love, friendship, or even career paths — that tug-of-war between what you want and what’s being withheld — it’s something a lot of people relate to, even if they don’t always talk about it.
If ‘Tease’ had a flavor, what would it be and why?
Blackberry lemonade — it’s bold, a little sour, and refreshing. It’s not trying to be sweet the whole time…and that’s exactly what makes it stick with you.
What was the creative process like when making ‘Tease?’
The process started with a lot of word vomit, honestly — just me getting everything out late at night while sitting at my keyboard and playing around with melodies. I had this concept in mind, but it took a while to shape it into something that felt right. Once I locked in the melody for the chorus, though, everything else started to fall into place more naturally, and my producer and I were able to build around that.
Even still, I spent a lot of time going back and forth with the lyrics — scrapping lines, rearranging verses, and really trying to make sure every word felt intentional. It ended up taking around six months to fully bring ‘Tease’ to life because I wanted my debut to really reflect the sound and message that I was stepping into as an artist.
What is your favorite lyric in ‘Tease’ and why?
I’d say my favorite lyric in ‘Tease’ is from the chorus: ‘Wanting me to want you.’ It’s simple, but it hits. That line really captures the core of the song — that feeling of someone pulling you in just enough to feel wanted, but not because they genuinely want you. It’s more about their need to feel desired, to have your attention, without actually showing up for you in a real way.
It’s a dynamic so many people go through, and I think that’s why it sticks with me. It’s one of those lines that says a lot without needing to over explain.
What message do you hope fans take away from your music and from ‘Tease?’
I hope fans walk away from ‘Tease’ — and my music in general — knowing that they are more than enough. That kind of back-and-forth can seem exciting at first, but eventually, it chips away at your confidence. Stepping out of that cycle takes a lot of strength, and I want people to know that I see that.
More than anything, I hope listeners remember that just because someone couldn’t see your worth doesn’t mean it isn’t there. You are someone’s dream person — and their inability to recognize that says more about them than it ever could about you.
What’s next for you? Are you working on any upcoming projects, or do you have any upcoming shows that we should be on the lookout for?
I’m definitely working on a few new projects right now, but I can’t give away too much just yet — that would be cheating, haha. All I’ll say is: keep an eye out over the next couple of months because there’s more coming soon.
As for shows, I’m super excited to share that I’m planning one in Costa Rica later this year! It means a lot to be able to bring my music somewhere that feels like home, and I can’t wait to share more as it all comes together.
