With her single and music video, “Mom Baby,” out now, we took some time to hear from Aoi Rose. Read below to learn more about Aoi Rose, the story behind her single, and what’s to come.
Hi Aoi Rose! Let’s start with how did you get your artist name?
Let’s keep that a mystery.
What city are you from and where are you based now?
I’m from Japan, and I’m currently based in Japan as well.
At what point in your life did you decide to pursue a career in music? How did you get started?
Since I was around four years old, I naturally felt like ‘I’m going to be an artist.’ I was taking dance lessons, and learned the joy of being on stage and expressing myself physically from a young age.
Has your upbringing played a role in shaping who you are and defining your sound today? If so, how?
Yes, it’s had a huge impact. I used to compete in dance contests from a young age, so I spent more time in front of mirrors than most kids. Since I was about four, I would practice posing and stretch my facial muscles every morning. Those experiences help me now with photo shoots and improvising expressions.
How would you describe your sound to readers who may not be familiar with you?
I’m half Japanese and half Korean, so people often ask, ‘Is this J-POP or K-POP?’ But, I actually love that question—because that’s exactly what I aim for. My goal has always been to go beyond boundaries and create a style that can’t be defined as either. I blend Japanese anime culture with techno vibes and the addictive, repetitive beats of K-POP.
Do you have any hobbies outside of music? What do you do to stay creative?
My creativity just comes down from above! I’ve been creative ever since I was born!
Who are some of your main musical influences?
Rihanna, Beyoncé, Doja Cat, Katy Perry, and Nicki Minaj. I’ve been dancing to their music since I was a child, and they’ve been a huge inspiration to me.
What are some of your future music career goals?
My goal is to perform at live shows and festivals all around the world. I want to visit many countries, share my music, and dance with everyone. I’m so excited for all the amazing moments to come.
What’s one of the proudest moments of your music career so far?
I’m still just getting started, so I haven’t had many major experiences yet. But, getting comments and messages from people overseas already made me really happy. It made me feel like all the effort that I’ve put in, without compromise, was worth it.
What would you say are the greatest lessons that you’ve learned so far?
‘To keep doing one thing—anything—for longer and more patiently than anyone else.’
Now onto your release, ‘Mom Baby.’ What inspired this song?
‘Mom Baby’ is my third single, and I wanted it to have a completely different vibe from the first two. I wanted to express full-on cuteness, so I incorporated Japanese Lolita fashion into it.
What is ‘Mom Baby’ about in your own words?
I feel that many young people in Japan struggle with low self-esteem. A lot of them lose confidence or become overly focused on appearances because of social media. I created this song with the message: ‘You’re the cutest just the way you are. It’s okay to live proudly and confidently.’
How did the music video for ‘Mom Baby’ come about? What was your vision for the video?
When I search online for studios before a shoot, I somehow always stumble upon the perfect place by chance. Once I find a spot based on intuition, I design the outfits and direction to match it. I also talk with my dance teacher about which moves will stand out in that space, and together we shape the vision.
What message do you hope fans take away from your music and from ‘Mom Baby?’
I want people to live every day thinking, ‘I’m cute, and I’m proud of myself.’ You’re doing your best—and you’re truly amazing.
What’s next for you? Are you working on any upcoming projects, or do you have any upcoming shows that we should be on the lookout for?
I’m planning to release my fourth single, ‘Bad Baby,’ in May 2025! It’s a sister track to ‘Mom Baby,’ with a contrasting concept. Please look forward to it!
