My State is a cross-continental punk band born out of raw emotion and real-life stories. Hailing from Argentina and the UK, but finding common ground—and each other—in the vibrant city of Málaga, Spain, their sound is a collision of cultures and influences. With roots in Britpop and Cali punk and a taste for melodic punk grit, they bring a fresh, passionate voice to a scene that thrives on honesty.

For the past year, they’ve been writing and recording in a modest studio on the southern coast of Spain, pouring everything into a debut album that’s nearly ready to shake the world. Their music is loud, heartfelt, and unfiltered—blending infectious melodies with lyrics that cut deep, whether tackling the unspoken or screaming out pure, unapologetic emotion.

In a music landscape overflowing with noise, My State is here to stand out—loud, proud, and ready to be heard.

With My State’s debut single, “Nostalgia,” out now, we took some time to hear from My State. Read below to learn more about My State, the story behind “Nostalgia,” and what’s to come.

Hi! Let’s start with how did the group’s name come about?

Lead singer, Heth, has been working on a Spotify playlist for years. It’s energetic and mostly punk and she named it My State as each time she added a song, the song resonated with her current state. Pablo, lead guitarist, loved the idea as when Heth wrote lyrics it also showed a state of mind. Each song represents another state, whether deliberate or not, so we decided to go with that.

What city are you all from, and where are you all based now?

Heth (singer) and Josh (drummer) are from Lancashire, UK.

Pablo (lead guitar) and Juan (base) are from Buenos Aires, Argentina.

When and how did the band form?

It started with Heth and Pablo, they have written an album and done demos for the songs. It’s been a year of hard work in the studio most days. Then, we found Josh on Instagram who was living close by in Malaga, Spain who was recently available and the perfect match musically, energetically and personally. And, Juan is an old friend of Pablo from Argentina who is also now living close by. They’ve played in bands together for 15 years, so he’s a very obvious and easy fit into the band, with his calm demeanor and punk background.

How would you all describe your band’s sound to readers who may not be familiar with you all?

We have a melodic pop punk sound. It’s very ’90s as we have many influences from our youth and have incorporated a Cali and British sound. Pablo comes from a Cali pop punk and hardcore melodic sound and Heth comes from a pop punk and very British rock, brit pop sound. Both songwriters have a music taste range wide enough to put you in a mental home if anyone was to listen to the random playlist. Bringing all these influences together really helps to create a new yet nostalgic punk sound.

Who are some of your group’s main musical influences?

No doubt

NOFX

Lagwagon

Blink 182

Spiderbait

Bad religion

Pulp

Millencolin

Metric

What’s one of the proudest moments of your group’s music career so far?

The lyrics to ‘Hologram’ are a proud moment. That song is addressing mental health and both sides of the struggle, people suffering and the people who love the person suffering and are trying to help.

Also, writing ‘Model Crisis.’ The song is written in a very clever way, both lyrically and musically. It was a tough write for Heth and Pablo with some heated moments, but it’s now their favourite song, so it was well worth it.

Both of these songs will be released on the album.

What would you all say are the greatest lessons that you’ve all learned so far?

Patience and hard work, and to just keep going.

Now onto ‘Nostalgia.’ What inspired this song?

So, this song is what started the band. Heth was back home at her parents house visiting in Lancashire in her mum’s kitchen with her brother who was strumming his guitar. He came out with the riffs and Heth just started singing a melody on top. They went to a rehearsal space close by the same day taking along with them their uncle who’s a drummer and dad who also plays some guitar and practiced the song.

Heth sent a video to Pablo, he loved it and the following week, she was in the studio with Pablo creating the song. He added many guitar parts to really bring it alive and they worked with Tom (Heth’s brother) to make sure he was still involved.

This is when the start of My State was created. Making this song brought Heth and Pablo together, and Pablo brought many of her scribbles chords to life over the following months.

What is ‘Nostalgia’ about?

It’s about the feeling and mindset when a relationship ends and the emotions that you naturally go through. Your mind telling you how you ‘should’ be feeling and all the times that nostalgic feelings make you think you might want it back. When in reality, you’re doing fine and shortly after you find you’re doing great. The song lyrics change slightly on each chorus from ‘back to my NEST, back to my MESS’ and then eventually ‘back to my BEST’…. Saying that at first you go into solitude, then craziness and messiness, and eventually you find your feet and are at your best.

What was the creative process like when making ‘Nostalgia?’

As it was the first song, we didn’t really have a process, that has come with time now that we have fourteen songs. This was more of Heth bringing the bones of a song to Pablo and them working it together to make it great.

How long did it take to complete ‘Nostalgia?’

It probably took a few months as we did a demo and then rerecorded it for mixing.

What message or messages do you all hope fans take away from ‘Nostalgia’ and your group’s music in general?

We hope people feel the music in the same way that we do. Some of the lyrics to our songs are very direct and to the point, they’ve come from an angry moment or situation and others have come from the heart. The music is done with so much intention to really make you feel it. We hope people can relate to the songs, but also have fun with them and dance.

What’s next for My State? Are you all working on any upcoming projects, or do you all have any upcoming shows that we should be on the lookout for?

We have almost finished writing an album of fourteen songs. We have demos to most of them completed, but now we have a solid drummer and bassist that we want to get them involved in the writing, so they can add their version of drums and base to the songs. So, we are preparing to record ALL the songs. In the meantime, we are rehearsing for live gigs. We have many venues waiting for dates, so it won’t be long.

The aim is high, we want to tour.

Before you all go, let’s ask you all an off-topic question. If you all were a mythical creature and played an instrument, what would you all be and play?

Heth: A mermaid (that can also fly) playing a telecaster made out of sea shells and the head of the telecaster is also a harmonica.

Pablo: Minotaur playing a theremin.

Josh: Unicorn that plays the hang.

Juan: A werewolf playing the didgeridoo.

Thank you all for the great interview; wish you all much continued success!
