With “My Anxiety” out now, we took some time to hear from LORYANN. Read below to learn more about LORYANN, the story behind “My Anxiety,” and what’s to come.
Hi LORYANN! Let’s start with how did you get your artist name?
Hey! So, LORYANN is actually a twist on my real name, Lorie-Anne. It felt like the right balance between personal and artistic.
What city are you from, and where are you based now?
I’m from Montreal, Canada, and still based here.
At what point in your life did you decide to pursue a career in music? How did you get started?
I’ve been into music for as long as I can remember. I started pretty young, playing everything I could get my hands on, from recorder and xylophone in daycare to piano, guitar, drums, bass, trumpet, singing, and ukulele over the years. Songwriting came naturally as soon as I picked up the guitar. I always knew I wanted to be an artist more than anything, but it wasn’t until the pandemic that I fully committed to that dream. I learned music production on YouTube and started releasing my songs independently.
How would you describe your sound to readers who may not be familiar with you?
I’d describe my sound as pop with an edge. Think mainstream meets dark undertones, giving each song a little bite.
Do you have any hobbies outside of music? What do you do to stay creative?
I love playing and watching hockey (big fan of the Montreal Canadiens), and sports in general. As for creativity, I think there’s no single formula for it. Creativity is ceaseless. Ideas are everywhere, but you have to choose to engage with them.
Who are some of your main musical influences?
I draw inspiration from a mix of genres. On the mainstream side, I love Justin Bieber, Chappell Roan, and Billie Eilish. Alternative artists like Artemas, Ari Abdul, and Two Feet have also influenced my sound.
What’s one of the proudest moments of your music career so far?
Honestly, one of the things that I’m most proud of is just going for it. Learning music production, releasing singles, and putting myself out there. I’ve wanted to do this my whole life, and finally taking that step despite the self-doubt feels amazing.
What would you say are the greatest lessons that you’ve learned so far?
At the beginning of this project, I came across someone who said ‘If you never give up, you can never fail.’ So simple, yet so true. You can achieve anything you want in life if you just keep going. That’s the mindset that’s helped me push through self-doubt, keep creating, and grow as an artist, even when things felt impossible.
Now onto your release, ‘My Anxiety.’ What inspired this song? What is ‘My Anxiety’ about?
‘My Anxiety’ is inspired by that feeling of being constantly on edge, like you’re running a race you can never win. It’s breathless, relentless, and impossible to escape, and I wanted the song to capture that fully. It doesn’t sugarcoat the spiral. It drags you straight into the chaos and dares you to feel it with me. Sonically, it’s like panic with a pulse: raw and urgent, with tension running through every beat.
What was the creative process like when making ‘My Anxiety?’
Making ‘My Anxiety’ was fun and challenging. My collaborator Jean-Pierre Limoges and I experimented a lot to capture the raw energy of the song, trying out different sounds and ideas until it felt right. Every session was really about diving into the emotion of the track and letting that guide our choices.
How long did it take to complete ‘My Anxiety?’
It took a few sessions to make the song. At first, we had recorded a different chorus, but it didn’t feel like it fully served the track. There was a lot of back-and-forth, reorganizing, and returning to the studio along the way, refining it until we were both happy with the result and felt it had reached its full potential.
What is your favorite lyric in ‘My Anxiety’ and why?
I love the first line ‘My head is pounding from the grinding of my teeth’ because it literally describes what happens when I get anxious in my sleep. I clench my jaw, grind my teeth, and wake up with a pounding headache. I also love ‘I’m on the run, you’re on the chase.’ It’s simple, but perfectly captures what it’s like to live with anxiety. It’s constantly hunting you, while you’re constantly trying to outrun it.
What message or messages do you hope fans take away from ‘My Anxiety’ and your music in general?
With ‘My Anxiety,’ I hope listeners feel seen and understood, all while having fun. My music is all about being honest, playful, and bold in a way that people can relate to and enjoy. At the end of the day, I just want my songs to make people feel something, whatever it is.
What’s next for you? Are you working on any upcoming projects, or do you have any upcoming shows that we should be on the lookout for?
I’ve got a lot more music coming in the next few months, and I can’t wait for everyone to hear it!
