With “Following A Voice Inside” out now, we took some time to hear from Kim Cameron. Read below to learn more about Kim Cameron, the story behind “Following A Voice Inside,” and what’s to come.
Hi Kim Cameron! Let’s start with how did you choose your artist name?
Well, it’s my real name! I guess, you can say that my parents chose it for me.
What city are you from?
I grew up in Southern California – Thousand Oaks to be exact.
At what point in your life did you decide to pursue a career in music? How did you get started?
I started in the 2nd grade playing clarinet. And, I have always been a music fan. My dad loved music – we used to dance in the living room to Elvia, Cat Stevens, the Beatles.
How would you describe your sound?
I am known for Electropop, House, and Deep House. This year, I was trying to show that I was more about the story and less about the genre.
Do you have any hobbies outside of music? What do you do to stay creative?
I am aerial dancer – so I guess that is one of my hobbies. I also perform at aerial showcases, so perhaps more than an hobby. I have experience in pole, hoop and hammock, but as of late, I have taken on a bigger challenge of silks.
Who are some of your main musical influences?
It really depends on which aspect. To me, the best storytellers were/are James Taylor, Aimee Mann, Alson Krauss, Cat Stevens and Carole King, but if you look at showmanship – Cher is a legend along with the Rolling Stones. I realize these are older artists, but I found they inspired me as I was growing up into music.
Who would be a dream to collaborate with?
Black Coffee.
What’s one of the proudest moments of your music career so far?
Singing the National Anthem for the NFL (Giants and also the Washington Nationals). So few games, and it is so selective. It was an honor and a privilege that I will never forget.
What would you say are the greatest lessons that you’ve learned so far?
The music business is filled with a lot of con artists who prey on artists.
Now onto your release, “Following A Voice Inside.” What inspired this song? What is “Following A Voice Inside” about?
I have always been a believer people need to follow their dreams. If you don’t, you will always have regrets. That’s what this song is about . . . follow that passion that is inside of you.
What was the inspiration behind the cover artwork for “Following A Voice Inside?”
My collaborator, Suzanna Grzanna, and I have worked together for years. We have never done a duet, so I wanted us both on the cover. We took that photo on the Santa Monica peer one afternoon. The weather was full of wind and sunshine. We not only took in the weather, but the weekend spirit that infects a busy pier on a Sunday afternoon – a place where inspiration meets reality.
What was the creative process like when making “Following A Voice Inside?”
Now that I have written almost 300 songs, I am always trying to come up with a different way to tell the story. This was more about the lyrical content than anything else. So, I took my time writing and rewriting the right way to tell this story.
How long did it take to complete “Following A Voice Inside?”
I believe it took us a good month and half – which is a long time for a short song. I think we both felt it touched us inside.
What is your favorite lyric in “Following A Voice Inside” and why?
“Heart says Go, So I Go” because that sums up me in one sentence. Whether it is love, friendship, music, career – I follow my heart.
What do you hope fans take away from “Following A Voice Inside” and your music in general?
I hope they feel inspired to pursue their dreams.
What’s next for you? Are you working on any upcoming projects, or do you have any upcoming shows that we should be on the lookout for?
I have my 3rd feature film releasing and a movie premiere in Miami Beach on May 6th! I am very excited.
