With “Michaela” out now, we took some time to hear from Grainville Train. Read below to learn more about Grainville Train, the story behind “Michaela,” and what’s to come.
Hey Grainville Train! Let’s start with how the band got its name?
The name, Grainville Train, comes from the hometown of founding member Esa Hautaniemi in Jyväskylä. Grainville is a playful translation of Jyväskylä, and Train refers to the busy railway next to Esa’s home – the sound of trains is still a part of everyday life. The name reflects their roots and the constant movement, like a musical train delivering stories to the audience.
Where are you originally from, and where are you now?
The band’s roots are deeply in Jyväskylä, Central Finland. The current lineup is a bit scattered – the singer lives in Vantaa near Helsinki – but the heart and soul of the band remain in Jyväskylä.
When and how was the band formed?
Grainville Train was born in 2008 when Esa wanted to bring the energy and stories of country rock to Finnish stages. The band is one of the first country rock bands in Finland. Over the years, the lineup has changed, but Esa is still steering the train forward with the same passion as in the beginning.
How would you describe your sound to those who may not know you yet?
Grainville Train has played emotional country rock since 2008. Their music combines warm atmosphere, storytelling lyrics, and authentic live energy. The newest music features a violin that brings folk warmth and old-world charm. The songs blend traditional and modern country rock, storytelling, and delicate violin, highlighting Finnish roots and authenticity.
Who have been your biggest musical influences?
We have drawn inspiration from legends like Brad Paisley, Eagles, and Tom Petty. Their music has inspired us both sonically and in storytelling.
What would be your dream music collaboration?
Our dream would be to open for the American country rock band 49 Winchester.
What has been one of your proudest moments in your music career so far?
One of our biggest achievements has been being chosen among Finland’s top four biker bands. It has been a great honor and recognition of our work.
What are the biggest lessons you’ve learned so far?
We’ve learned that you really have to love the music that you play and live according to it – live the country life fully.
What inspired your new song ‘Michaela?’
The inspiration came from the founder’s own family and youngest daughter, Michaela, who the song is about.
What is ‘Michaela’ about?
The band’s songwriter, Esa Hautaniemi, wrote and composed this song for his own daughter, Michaela, who still lives abroad. The song deals with distance, longing, and the meaning of home — and how love stays with you, even when life takes you in different directions.
Esa Hautaniemi: I wrote ‘Michaela’ during a time when it was hard to find the right words for love, longing, and the meaning of home. I wanted to create a composition that is both tender and powerful.
‘Michaela’ is a warm and narrative country rock/country folk song that highlights Finnish rootedness and authenticity. It tells about finding your own path, detaching from your roots, and how loved ones remain close in your heart even when separated by distance.
What was the creative process like when making ‘Michaela?’
The creative process was natural and easy because the song is about real life and Esa’s own daughter. It came straight from the heart.
How long did it take to complete ‘Michaela?’
Completing the song, including studio recordings, took a few weeks.
What message do you hope fans will take from ‘Michaela’ and your music in general?
We hope young people find their own path and understand that love travels with them even when life leads them in different directions. We want our music to convey good vibes and storytelling.
What’s next? Are you working on new projects or upcoming gigs that we should know about?
The studio is booked for early September, and we will be recording new music throughout the rest of the year. We’re preparing our debut LP for next year. Our next live gig is on September 20th in Kuopio, at Tahkovuori Ski Resort in Finland.
