Hi AVA RENN! Let’s start with how did you get your artist name?
“Wren” means songbird, and “Renn” felt more rock-n-roll. I like how angular it looks.
What city are you from, and where are you based now?
Houston. I moved to the hills of Austin a couple of weeks ago—a whole nervous system reset.
At what point in your life did you decide to pursue a career in music? How did you get started?
After feeling a bit out of touch and caught up in being a cover artist, I journeyed to the West Texas desert with my producer to write my first studio album and find my own sound. I’ve harbored music in me for as long as I can remember, but channeling it into completed pieces of art solidified that this is what I will do for the rest of my life.
How would you describe your sound to readers who may not be familiar with you?
My sound is gritty, sensual, and directive. I walk the line between pop and rock—my sonic profile is full of textures and colors.
Do you have any hobbies outside of music? What do you do to stay creative?
To stay creative, I read and write poetry, exercise regularly, and study the minds of my favorite physical-medium artists.
Who are some of your main musical influences?
PJ Harvey, Alison Mosshart, Chris Cornell, and Layne Staley are my top musical influences—for both their artistry and their vocals. There’s a certain presence of grit and honesty I admire in all of these examples.
What’s one of the proudest moments of your music career so far?
The proudest moment of this journey so far is getting to record at Pachyderm Studios—being in the room where some of the greatest have been. Being there with such an incredible team really set the tone for the remainder of my career and motivates me to go even further. I’m blessed to have had that opportunity. It’s all about alchemizing the lows into rays of light.
What would you say are the greatest lessons that you’ve learned so far?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned so far in my career is to let go. I tend to white-knuckle a lot…but creativity has been a constant teacher of letting things flow and change as they will. While I still remain in the driver’s seat of this pursuit, I have to remember to be a conduit as well.
Now onto your release, ‘None the Wiser.’ What inspired this song? What is ‘None the Wiser’ about?
When I wrote this song, I was going through a very dark, depressive phase of my life. I felt as though the behaviors and patterns of thought I was indulging in weren’t serving me, but I didn’t feel deserving enough to find the light. I felt trapped, depersonalized, and suffocated. Those feelings were the deliberate reasons for choosing the mirror maze and underwater settings.
What was the creative process like when making ‘None the Wiser?’ How long did it take to complete ‘None the Wiser?’
‘None the Wiser’ was written in two hours and produced in four. The music video took a couple of months of prep work and imagining, but one full day in two different cities to shoot. I loved every step of the process.
How did the music video for ‘None the Wiser’ come about? What was your vision for the video?
For this particular song, I wanted dream-like, otherworldly settings to resemble the entrapment of toxic cycles. The mirror maze represents the introspection the lyrics call for—the unknowing of knowing oneself. The underwater scenes are a nod to the feeling of being trapped in a loop, a drowning of sorts.
What is your favorite lyric in ‘None the Wiser’ and why?
‘No, this morose is not a gift’ has to be my favorite. Although it’s one of the most concise statements in the song, it speaks to darkness and depth often being labeled as a gift—and the inability to see that when you’re in the depths of depression and stagnant cycles.
What message or messages do you hope fans take away from ‘None the Wiser’ and your music in general?
I want my music to embody freedom and radical honesty—to inspire people to break from the bounds of what they’ve been told life is ‘supposed to’ be and to pursue the truth that brings them the most light.
What’s next for you? Are you working on any upcoming projects, or do you have any upcoming shows that we should be on the lookout for?
Most importantly, my debut album — Lightning Child — has dropped. Singles have been rolling out alongside music videos, and I’m beyond excited to finally share what I’ve been building over the past year. This project is my first baby — the most honest and expansive body of work I’ve created so far.
Currently, I’m in the process of recording my second studio album, Sellout’s Prelude, at Pachyderm Studios. The album will be out in the summer of next year! I’m ecstatic about this project—it’s very representative of my inner world and the sounds that go with it. Sellout’s Prelude will give listeners a raw insight into my personal story.
