Alexis Lace is a singer-songwriter and music producer based in London, UK. She started writing music when she was 12, and has just released her fourth album, Silver.
With “Stork” out now, we took some time to hear from Alexis Lace. Read below to learn more about Alexis Lace, the story behind “Stork,” and what’s to come.
Hi Alexis Lace! Let’s start with how did you get your artist name?
Alexis is actually one of my middle names and it has always been my preferred name! Lace is just short for my actual surname, which I decided not to use as it is already quite famous. My real full name is Marina Alexis Beverly Lacoste!
What city are you from, and where are you based now?
I was born in Agen, South-Western France, and I grew up there, but I have been in the UK for 20 years. I am currently based in London, where I’ve lived since 2007.
At what point in your life did you decide to pursue a career in music? How did you get started?
I’m not sure I remember how this was decided to be honest because I started writing songs when I was only 12! I’ve always been super creative. It’s just who I am, I love making songs.
How would you describe your sound to readers who may not be familiar with you?
My last album, Silver, was mainly what I would describe to be a blend of R&B, Trip hop, Soul, Alternative Hip-Hop, electronica, and jazz. The two albums before that were electronic pop. I just love experimenting with various genres!
Do you have any hobbies outside of music? What do you do to stay creative?
I don’t really have to do anything to stay creative – I know it sounds cliché, but it’s just who I am, I even write songs in my sleep, honest! It can feel like a curse sometimes as my brain gets no rest. I’ll just blame the ADHD. Hobbies? I barely have time for these, but for one, I am a huge history nerd! Particularly, but not limited to, English history. I also love, love, love animals. I could watch videos of beavers building dams all day!
Who are some of your main musical influences?
I used to be a rocker, so my main influences were mostly metal, especially nu metal acts, as well as grunge, and southern rock. Think Nirvana, Limp Bizkit, Staind, Puddle of Mudd, but also Eminem, Alanis Morissette, and Garbage. I have since moved on to more commercial genres, and I have been mostly inspired by the League of Legends songs, Grandson, UNSECRET, and other older acts, such as All Saints, and Anastacia.
What is your dream music collaboration?
My absolute dream would be to be asked to participate on a League of Legends song! I do have a dirty secret though…I know it’s super cheesy, but oh how I would LOVE to be a Eurovision contestant! This is my biggest guilty pleasure.
What’s one of the proudest moments of your music career so far?
I don’t think I am really at liberty to say much about it really, but being scouted on social media by a company who worked for Riot Games at the time, to perform in a League of Legends related small event was incredible, as I am such a huge fan of these tracks, so while the event did not really go too well due external factors, and this was not an actual League of Legends gig, being associated with it was like a dream almost come true!
What would you say are the greatest lessons that you’ve learned so far?
I’ve learned to be more patient, and most importantly, that we are all struggling here! You don’t just become successful overnight, it is a lot of work and most of us are in the same boat.
Now onto your release, “Stork.” What inspired this song? What is “Stork” about?
I decided I would not be having kids at the tender age of 11, and now that I’m all grown up, this still stands! You can imagine the amount of people I’ve had telling me that I would change my mind, as if all women only had one purpose in life. I’ve also had boyfriends lying about being ok with it, and one was actually mad at me for it. It’s really easy putting pressure on those who can actually do all the labour though, isn’t it?
What was the inspiration behind the cover artwork for “Stork?”
This was part of a whole promotional shoot I did for my album, Silver. It’s very elegant, somber, which I think fits the mood for this song, and the rest of the album as well.
What was the creative process like when making “Stork?”
I was just on holiday and the weather was terrible, so I started writing and this song just like, came to me. Then, when I got back, I did the producing and the recording. Easy peasy!
How long did it take to complete “Stork?”
Not very long actually, but I did go over the mix over and over and over again. I’m a perfectionist, and I went really crazy with this album!
How did the music video for “Stork” come about? What was your vision for the video?
To be honest, I thought about it for ages and couldn’t come up with anything due to very limited resources, so I just kind of winged it last minute! I thought the colours black and red fitted the somber mood, and then I just had fun with the editing. Oh, I love video editing!
What do you hope fans take away from “Stork” and your music in general?
I hope other people, especially women, who have also chosen a childfree life, can relate to it, find some moral support within it. Please remember that you do not need a reason not to want kids! When those people ask you why, it is perfectly ok not to give an answer, or even better, do a reverse Uno on them.
What’s next for you? Are you working on any upcoming projects, or do you have any upcoming shows that we should be on the lookout for?
No shows planned at the moment, but I do intend to get on this the second half of this year, time permitting. I have just started working on my next album, and I may even start producing for others too, who knows! I am also slowly trying to get back into acting.

Before you go, let’s ask you something random. What is your comfort film?
I have a few, but The Greatest Showman is an absolute winner here. I don’t know why, there is something about it that gives me peace. If I’m ill, or super down, there is something about it that I find soothing. If not this one, I’ll pick The Emperor’s New Groove! It’s the best thing ever, honestly.
Thank you for the great interview; wish you much continued success!
