Hi Daniel! Let’s start with who you are and where are you from?
I’m Daniel Chin, Director of Operations for Juici Patties and CEO of the U.S. division. I was born in Jamaica, a place rich in culture and tradition, and spent my early years there before moving to Canada with my family.
How did you get your start in the industry and what do you currently do? How long have you been in the industry?
My journey in the food industry began when I decided to join our family business, Juici Patties, after graduating from The University of Guelph. I’ve been with Juici Patties since 2013, focusing on expanding our brand both in Jamaica and internationally.
What decisions influenced why you chose to pursue a career in this industry?
Growing up with a strong connection to my family’s business and witnessing its potential to share Jamaican culture globally influenced my decision. I saw an opportunity to make a meaningful impact through food.
How did Juici Patties get its name?
Juici Patties was founded by my father, Jukie Chin, in 1978. The name reflects the delicious, juicy fillings of our patties, which have become a signature of our brand.
What led you to opening up shop in Miami? And, where will the Miami location be located?
Miami was chosen for its large Jamaican and Caribbean community, and many residents are already familiar with our cuisine. It’s a logical step for our U.S. expansion. The first three U.S. locations are expected to open next month.
What are some of the remarkable menu items that will be offered? Are there any items exclusive to the Miami location?
Our menu will feature our signature flaky patties filled with beef, chicken curry, and vegetables, among others. We’ll also introduce combos exclusive to Miami, including a patty, sliced avocado, fried plantains, and a drink.
What makes your story unique?
My story is unique due to the blend of my Jamaican roots and Canadian education, coupled with the transition from being a student to leading a major international expansion of our family business.
What are some of your goals for the future?
Future goals include further expansion into other U.S. states with significant Jamaican and Caribbean communities, like New York, Texas, and Georgia, and continuing to share the richness of Jamaican cuisine.
What skills do you have that led you to be able to succeed in your industry?
A combination of strategic planning, a deep understanding of our brand’s heritage, and a commitment to quality and authenticity have been crucial to my success.
Do you have any role models or influences that have guided your journey?
My father, Jukie Chin, has been a significant influence, teaching me the value of hard work, dedication, and staying true to one’s roots.
What words of advice would you have for people who have similar aspirations?
Stay true to your vision, be prepared for challenges, and always look for ways to innovate while respecting your heritage and traditions.
Any other things we should be on the lookout for from you?
Beyond our U.S. expansion, we’re exploring new menu items and ways to make our brand even more sustainable and community-focused. Stay tuned for more exciting developments from Juici Patties.
Thank you for the great interview; wish you and Juici Patties much continued success!
