The Wow Wows are an independent Psychedelic 4-piece band from Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho that craft a unique blend of cosmic American garage rock. Lead singer/guitar and founding member, Hunter Jones, is an active participant in the Pacific Northwest’s music scene – from putting together DIY shows in his hometown to producing records for other bands in his home studio, The Wow Wows Emporium. “Johny’s Gone Invisible” is the band’s latest single, which tells the tale of that infamous long lost American hero.
With “Johny’s Gone Invisible” out now, we took some time to hear from Hunter Jones of The Wow Wows. Read below to learn more about The Wow Wows, the story behind “Johny’s Gone Invisible,” and what’s to come.
Hi! Let’s start with how did the band’s name come about?
I really don’t remember. A couple days before our 2nd show, we decided to call ourselves that, so we did. Personally, I think it’s kind of a dumb name, but we like a lot of dumb things, so it fits us.
What city are you all from, and where are you all based now?
Dyllan (bass) and I met in middle school in Rathdrum, a small town just outside of Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho. Now he has kids, bought a house out in Spokane, WA, but definitely hasn’t settled down yet. Amy (keys) and Kellen (drums) currently live in Spokane too, but we all pretty much grew up in the same area doing the same things. And, I live in Coeur d’ Alene now.
How and when did the band form?
Well, Dyllan and I have pretty much been the only consistent members since I moved back and we started playing shows together in 2017, but we’ve been jamming as friends long before that. Amy joined at the end of 2025 to round out our live sound with organ, something we’ve always been after, and last but not least, Kellen, who is The Wow Wows 13th drummer, will play his first show with us in March.
The Wow Wows have had thirteen different drummers. That seems like quite a lot of drummers. Why do you all think that number is so high?
I’d rather not say, but you can imagine something really bad happened to them all. Or, maybe they just went invisible.
How would you all describe your band’s sound?
It’s basically just all of our favorite bands put through a blender and spiked.
Who are some of your band’s main musical influences?
Nowadays, there’s so much music we have access to, so even if I love one song by an artist, I might not necessarily enjoy listening to that artist’s whole catalog, especially, if I can just hit next. So, instead of “Who” I think it’s more about “What” and that being said, I’m influenced in styles of sounds like: ’30s blues and folk, ’40s swing, ’50s Rockabilly, ’60s Psych Pop and garage rock, ’70s Krautrock, ’80s Post Punk and ’90s Shoegaze. I could have named bands, but it would’ve just taken forever.
What’s one of the proudest moments of your group’s music career so far?
It either comes down to covering Black Sabbath’s Paranoid album in its entirety at a show once or doing this interview.
What would you all say are the greatest lessons that you’ve all learned so far?
We are not people that you should be looking up to or getting life lessons from, but when it comes to rock and roll and performing it, we’ve learned that it’s all about having fun and giving the audience something unexpected.
Now onto “Johny’s Gone Invisible.” What inspired this song?
Well, it mainly comes from playing live in front of a crowd. When you put together a set, you want it to flow and sometimes that’s all it takes to inspire me to write a new song. I wanted to add something fresh to the set that was a little slower tempo, but still uppity and fun.
What is “Johny’s Gone Invisible” about?
It’s not really about anything or anyone specific. Unless their name is Johny, then I guess it’s all about them. It’s more like a bunch of different Johnnys that I don’t really see any more, thrown together. You know in like old programs there was always this kind of hero type of Johnny who always got the girl and saved the town. And then there’s the Johnny that’s like this deadbeat dad type of Johnny who said he was going to go get cigarettes, but abandons his family and never comes home. Those were the kind of Johnny’s I was thinking about during the time I wrote it, but it could be about any Johnny you want.
What was the inspiration behind the cover artwork for “Johny’s Gone Invisible?”
It’s just a picture of my wife because I think she’s sexy.
What was the creative process like when making “Johny’s Gone Invisible?”
Honestly, it was my wife and a couple friends that kept hounding me to do something with that song. So after a few sleepless nights, I finally gave in and went down to the basement and really early in the morning just as the sun was creeping in through those little windows that some basements have, I recorded it all, mostly in the first take.
How long did it take to complete “Johny’s Gone Invisible?”
It took me about two hours to track it, and it would have been done sooner, but I was by myself, so I had to move microphones around, and I messed with the drum sound for quite a bit. I played the drums last because I didn’t want to wake the neighbors. Then, I went to bed. I got up later that evening to mix and master it and that’s when I was thinking, man this could really use some cowbell. Right then and there, I heard my wife upstairs come through the front door. She had just gotten home from the bar and wanted to hear what I was working on, so I had her play the cowbell part.
What do you all hope fans take away from “Johny’s Gone Invisible” and your band’s music in general?
We want people to have a good time, and we don’t want to be taken too seriously. We’ve all been through some tough sh*t, but we don’t let that define us. We’re making music for people who have lived life and want to keep living it because that’s the kind of people we are.
What’s next for you all? Are you all working on any upcoming projects, or do you all have any upcoming shows that we should be on the lookout for?
Yes, there are 8 or 9 more singles on the way, which we intend to put out on an album. As of now, we’re booked out from March-June around all of our surrounding cities, and we plan on touring once the new album is out. Follow for more details.
