Following a five-year hiatus, Mexican Rock band Captain Mantis return with their debut EP, Vice Market. The four-track EP is the group’s first release since their titular maxi-single, “Captain Mantis,” in 2020. Vice Market is a great comeback project as it demonstrates the band’s versatility and masterfulness – each song on the EP embodies various subgenres and eras of Rock.

Vice Market kicks off with “Moonshine Alley.” “Moonshine Alley” is a catchy Surf Rock jam. The record has an epic bridge and a killer breakdown. Track two, “Simon Frost,” starts off with a folky sound, then ups the BPM and flips to a more swing-like Rock sound that is reminiscent of Elvis Presley. The song is chock-full of sounds, and the ebb and flow is masterful and captivating. The penultimate song, “Galatea,” piggybacks off the Folk Rock sound from “Simon Frost.” The Bob Dylan-esque track has a cinematic soundscape that is soothing and tuneful. The titular song, “Vice Market,” is the perfect closer. The six-minute Latin Rock record pays homage to the band’s roots and has bilingual lyrics, English and Spanish. It furthers the band’s brilliance and one-of-a-kind sound, and showcases the lead singer’s powerful, raw vocals.

Vice Market was produced by Latin GRAMMY-nominated producers Paco Lazo and Andrés Lavalle at Sultana Records in Monterrey, Mexico. The four-track masterpiece takes listeners on a sonic journey and has the perfect amount of variety, making it appealing to all listeners. With the release drought officially over, fans are eagerly waiting for what’s to come. For now, play Vice Market on repeat and indulge in the Rock ‘n’ Roll extravaganza.
