With “Meli (Zoom Zoom)” out now, we took some time to hear from Anastasia Giousef. Read below to learn more about Anastasia Giousef, the story behind “Meli (Zoom Zoom),” and what’s to come.

Hi Anastasia Giousef! How did you get your artist name?

My name isn’t a stage name — it’s my real name, the one I have on my ID. Since I’m half Egyptian, “Giousef” is the Egyptian part of my name.

What city are you from, and where are you based now?

I am half Greek and half Egyptian, but I was born and raised in Athens, Greece, where I still live.

At what point in your life did you decide to pursue music? How did you get started?

I was artistic from a very young age. At 16, I started dance, and by around 25, I had become one of the most well-known dancers in Greece. That’s when I decided to get into music as well, so I could combine singing with dancing.

How has your upbringing shaped who you are and influenced your sound?

I’m not sure exactly how my upbringing shaped me, but because my childhood wasn’t very easy, I learned to rely only on myself and to fight for what I want until I achieve it, overcoming every obstacle along the way.

How would you describe your sound to readers who may not know you yet?

I would describe my music the same way that I describe myself — original, dance-oriented, and dynamic.

Do you have any hobbies outside of music? What keeps you creative?

To stay creative, I like taking care of myself. In my free time, I work out, get massages, do body scrubs, go to the sauna, and anything that has to do with personal self-care.

Who are some of your main musical influences?

I always loved Beyoncé and similar types of artists — strong, successful, sexy women. I think I’ve been influenced a lot by them.

What’s one of the proudest moments of your music career so far?

One of the proudest moments in my career was with my first song, “To Asteraki Mou.” I performed it live in front of large crowds, and many well-known people came to the release event to see me.

What would you say are the greatest lessons you’ve learned so far?

The biggest lessons that I’ve learned are to never give up, and that when you love something, you have to keep going even if you fail, even if things don’t go as planned, even if you receive harsh criticism.

Now onto your new release, “Meli (Zoom Zoom).” What inspired this song?

The initial inspiration came from the music that my collaborator presented to me. We all started writing the lyrics together, and the result turned out amazing.

What inspired the cover artwork for “Meli (Zoom Zoom)?”

Since the song is called “Meli,” we decided to include a honey scene in the music video. That’s where the idea for the cover artwork came from.

How did your collaboration with ANAI$ and Takinio Soul come about?

My collaboration with ANAI$ happened very unexpectedly. We met at the gym — she introduced herself as a trainer and started giving me personal training sessions. While we were talking, she told me that she also makes music and showed me her work. I loved it, and we started looking for a producer to create a track together. She already knew Takinio Soul, who recently made the Greek hit, “Shik Shak Shok.” We went to the studio, I listened to the music that he proposed, and that’s how the deal was sealed.

What was the creative process like when making “Meli (Zoom Zoom)?”

The creative process went through different stages. We were moving slowly but steadily, and even when ANAI$ and I had a disagreement at some point, we overcame it because we believed so much in the song.

How long did it take to complete the song?

We finished the music in early summer and released it in October — so it took about five months in total.

How did the music video come together? What was your vision for it?

Throughout the entire period, we discussed ideas for the video. Each of us contributed concepts, and we ended up using helicopters, supercars, a villa, and of course the honey scene.

What do you hope fans take away from “Meli (Zoom Zoom)” and your music in general?

The song is somewhat feminist and sends a message to women: that they shouldn’t give their “honey” easily, especially to people who don’t deserve it — and that it’s never too late for a new beginning. But even if people don’t catch the deeper meaning, we want them to dance to it and enjoy it.

What’s next for you? Any upcoming shows or projects?

I always have new shows, which I announce on Instagram. Every weekend I’m performing somewhere in Greece. I’m not currently preparing a new project, but you never know — if I meet someone who inspires me, then something new will definitely come.
