With “Miss Independent” out now, we took some time to hear from Ali Lamb. Read below to learn more about Ali Lamb, the story behind “Miss Independent,” and what’s to come.

Hi Ali Lamb! Let’s start with how did you get your artist name?

My artist name is essentially a shortened version of my full name. I wanted something short and sharp that rolls off the tongue, while still feeling completely true to who I am.

What city are you from and where are you based now?

I’m from and still based in the south-east suburbs of Melbourne, Australia.

At what point in your life did you decide to pursue a career in music? How did you get started?

I properly began pursuing my music career just before we went into lockdown, playing gigs at a local café. In October 2021, I released my debut single, ‘Keep Fighting,’ a song that I wrote for a family member who was battling breast cancer at the time. I wanted to create music that made a difference, and I feel like I accomplished that with this track. All proceeds from the song, along with additional donations I received leading up to the release, were donated to the Breast Cancer Foundation.

Has your upbringing played a role in shaping who you are and defining your sound today? If so, how?

My father is a fellow musician who used to perform in bands from a young age. He is a huge inspiration in my career and helps me with all my music. Music has also just been something that’s been a big part of my life forever. I went straight into lessons at the age of six and have been working hard ever since. I don’t think that I would be where I am today without the support of my family and friends.

How would you describe your sound to readers who may not be familiar with you?

I would describe my sounds as singer-songwriter, acoustic, indie-pop/folk. Similar artists would be Lizzy Mcalpine, Taylor Swift and Sabrina Carpenter. These artists are huge inspirations of mine and play a huge role in my sound and songwriting.

Do you have any hobbies outside of music? What do you do to stay creative?

I am a girl of many hobbies, I am a bookworm and love getting lost in pages. I have also recently finished my first draft of my debut novel, which I’m hoping to release soon. I also sew – I’ve been working on tote bags this year and love how they have turned out, love putting puzzles together. However, my last 1k puzzle ended up being 999 pieces and that hurt my soul. I also spend 4-5 days a week at the gym and have really gotten into running this year. I ran my first 10km race in June. It was a huge challenge, but also a huge accomplishment.

Who are some of your main musical influences?

My main musical influencers as mentioned in a previous question are Taylor Swift, Lizzy Mcalpine and Sabrina Carpenter. One of the main reasons these three are my top influencers are because of the emotional and raw lyrics, and the way that they mold them into the perfect song. I feel like these three artists have played a huge role in the structure of my music and help me feel less scared to put myself out there. They are independent and incredibly talented women that I can’t help but look up to.

Who would be a dream to collaborate with?

You might expect me to name one of the three main inspirations in my music career, but my dream collaboration would actually be with Finneas. I’m a huge fan of his work and the way that he expresses emotion so effortlessly through his music. It’s no secret that he’s incredibly talented, especially when it comes to songwriting and production. I feel like I’d learn so much from working with him, and together we could create something really special: a powerful, emotional track with a fun and unexpected edge.

What’s one of the proudest moments of your music career so far?

One of the proudest moments in my music career has been finding the courage to release my own music, especially the more vulnerable songs like ‘Make It Make Sense.’ I often write songs for the people that I love, which is something that I truly enjoy, but this track was different. It was for me, and about me, deeply personal in a way that felt both empowering and exposing. Another song that holds that same weight is ‘I’ll Forgive You Anyway,’ which was one of the hardest tracks that I’ve ever written and released.

What would you say are the greatest lessons that you’ve learned so far?

One of the greatest lessons that I have learned is you write, release and create for yourself. The music industry is a hard place, and yes you may blow up overnight, but you have to stick true to yourself and do it because you love it. If you are in it to make money or become famous, then you are in it for the wrong reasons. I am so happy with the way that my career is going and the way I have been sticking true to my character and values.

Now onto your release, ‘Miss Independent.’ What inspired this song? What is ‘Miss Independent’ about?

‘Miss Independent’ is a song that I wrote for my best friend, who has been through a lot over the past few years. She features in the spoken dialogue at the beginning of the track. I wanted her voice to be part of the project because the song is just as much hers as it is mine. It’s about the people who come and go from our lives, and the reminder that, at the end of the day, we don’t need anyone else to live a full and meaningful life. Strength comes from within, and ‘Miss Independent’ celebrates exactly that.

What was the creative process like when making ‘Miss Independent?’ How long did it take to complete ‘Miss Independent?’

The process of creating ‘Miss Independent’ was one of the longest that I’ve experienced. I first discovered the instrumental track last year, knowing I wanted to try something different from my usual approach and sound. Normally, I’d pick up my guitar, strum a few chords, and sing whatever came to mind until a song started to form. But this time, having a pre-made track changed everything. I started by laying out the structure, then focused on what I truly wanted to write about.

I knew I wanted this song to be for my best friend, someone who inspires me deeply and plays a huge role in my music journey. The first verse came to me effortlessly, and I immediately knew it was right. But, the rest of the song took time. I got caught up in overthinking, trying to write something perfect. After months of back and forth, I finally pushed through and finished the first outline…which ended up changing about a million times!

I second-guess myself a lot and tend to overwork my songs, but I’m so proud of how ‘Miss Independent’ turned out. It’s a true reflection of growth, not just in the song, but in me.

What is your favorite lyric in ‘Miss Independent’ and why?

My favourite lyric from ‘Miss Independent’ would have to be, ‘I’m standing on my own two feet tonight.’ It’s the opening line of the song and, to me, it perfectly sets the tone for everything that follows. It’s a simple yet powerful statement about reclaiming your strength, moving forward on your own terms, and being proud of where you are, especially after everything that you’ve been through. That line captures the heart of what this song is about: independence, resilience, and learning to rely on yourself.

What message do you hope fans take away from your music and from ‘Miss Independent?’

I hope my fans take away that any kind of ending, whether it’s a relationship or simply growing up, can feel scary and uncertain. But through it all, you are strong, capable, and independent. You have everything that it takes to chase your dreams and make them happen.

What’s next for you? Are you working on any upcoming projects, or do you have any upcoming shows that we should be on the lookout for?

I am always working on my next project. My father and I have set up an at home studio that we are working away in daily. Without giving too much away, I will be traveling Europe soon and my next track will be the perfect soundtrack for this adventure. Once I’m back from Europe, I am hoping to get back into gigs, which will start with some open mic nights and potentially my first headline show.
