Hi John! Tell us about who you are and where you’re from.

My name is John Mgbemena. I’m a Nigerian model and actor, born in Atlanta, Georgia. Even though I was born in the U.S., my roots are deeply Nigerian—both of my parents are from Nigeria, and I proudly identify with that heritage. I graduated from Georgia State University with a degree in Biology and was later accepted into Pharmacy School. I grew up in Riverdale, Georgia, and I’d describe myself as a humble, driven, and positive person who is always looking to grow and step outside his comfort zone.

How did you get your start acting and modeling? How long have you been in the entertainment industry?

I got my start in acting and modeling during my time at Georgia State. I decided to do something completely out of character and auditioned for the African Student Association fashion show. Growing up, I was extremely shy and introverted, so this was a huge leap for me. I had no idea what to expect, but that last-minute decision ended up changing the course of my life. Since then, I’ve been in the entertainment industry for over a decade.

What decisions influenced your career path? What makes your story unique?

Choosing to step outside of my comfort zone and pursue something that I truly enjoy had a major impact on my career path. What makes my story unique is the unconventional journey that I took—growing up in a Nigerian household where a traditional career like pharmacy was expected, but choosing instead to follow my passion for modeling and acting. It took courage, faith, and persistence.

What was the first modeling gig you landed? What was your first acting role?

My first modeling gig was actually that Georgia State ASA fashion show — the one that started it all. My first acting role was on the show, Chrisley Knows Best, where I played a swim instructor.

What do you find most rewarding about acting and modeling? What do you find most challenging?

What I find most rewarding is the wide range of opportunities that come when you stay consistent and put in the work – whether that’s hitting the gym, attending classes, or sharpening your craft. On the flip side, the most challenging part can be the attention. As someone who’s naturally reserved, the spotlight can sometimes feel overwhelming.

How do you stay in shape and prepare for shoots?

I’m in the gym regularly – usually at LA Fitness – staying committed to my fitness. I also take acting classes to make sure that I’m always prepared for auditions and shoots. Staying ready is key.

What skills have helped you to succeed in the industry?

Confidence, discipline, and a willingness to constantly learn and improve have been crucial. Being consistent in the gym and open to growth – both physically and mentally – has really helped me stay grounded and competitive in this industry.

Do you have any role models or influences that have guided your journey?

Absolutely – Jesus Christ. Without Him, none of this would be possible. He’s my foundation and the guiding light in everything I do.

What words of advice do you have for people with similar aspirations?

Have faith and always believe in yourself. Trust in God’s timing and stay consistent in your efforts. With God, anything is possible.

What are some of your goals for the future?

I want to start a family and continue spreading the message of Jesus Christ – whether that’s through a podcast, speaking engagements, or just by being a light in people’s lives. That’s the legacy that I want to build.

Any other things or upcoming projects that we should currently be on the lookout for from you?

Definitely! I have a few upcoming fashion shows this month, including Miami Swim Week and Atlanta Swim Week. I’m also featured in a new film called Every Romantic Movie, and I just released a fitness eBook on Amazon titled Six-Pack in 45 Days: The Ultimate Blueprint. It’s available now!

Before you go, let’s ask you something random. What is your favorite Bible verse?

My favorite Bible verse is John 3:16:

‘For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life.’

Thank you for the great interview; wish you much continued success!
