With “Jim Brown” out now, we took some time to hear from King Paul. Read below to learn more about King Paul, the story behind “Jim Brown,” and what’s to come.

Hi King Paul! Let’s start with how did you get your artist name?

I chose King Paul as a reminder to lead with purpose and responsibility—like a “king mindset,” not ego. It’s about being disciplined, standing for something, and representing my family and community with integrity. “Paul” is me, and “King” is the standard I hold myself to.

What city are you from, and where are you based now?

I’m from Queens, New York, and I’m based in Jamaica, Queens.

At what point in your life did you decide to pursue a career in music? How did you get started?

Music has always been in me, but I got serious when I realized my songs were helping me and other people push through real life—pressure, responsibility, mental battles, faith, all of it. I started by writing consistently, recording what I could, and treating every release like a step forward in a bigger mission, not just a moment.

How would you describe your sound to readers who may not be familiar with you?

I’d describe it as conscious reggae x modern hip-hop/trap fusion—roots and culture in the delivery, but with current energy in the production. It’s spiritual, motivational, and honest—music you can feel in your chest, but still think to.

Do you have any hobbies outside of music? What do you do to stay creative?

I’m big on anything that resets my mind—family time, learning, journaling, and just being around real people. Sometimes the most creative thing I can do is live life and come back to the music with something true to say.

Who are some of your main musical influences?

I’m inspired by artists who balance message and vibe—Protoje, Skip Marley, Chronixx, Dre Island, Mortimer and that whole lane of modern conscious reggae, plus hip-hop that speaks on real life and resilience.

What is your dream music collaboration?

Dream collab would be Protoje, Skip Marley, Chronixx, Dre Island, and Mortimer because they balance message, culture, and modern sound in a way that I respect.

What’s one of the proudest moments of your music career so far?

One of my proudest moments is releasing music that’s clean, intentional, and spiritually grounded, while still sounding modern and competitive. Every time someone tells me a song helped them through a hard moment, that’s a win bigger than numbers.

What would you say are the greatest lessons that you’ve learned so far?

Consistency beats hype. Also, staying authentic is the real long game—especially when you’re building a career independently. And, I’ve learned to respect the process: writing, improving, marketing, and showing up even when it’s not perfect.

Now onto your release, “Jim Brown.” What inspired this song? What is “Jim Brown” about?

“Jim Brown” came from my morning routine—calling on Jah, facing pressure, and refusing to fold. It’s about spiritual warfare in real life: temptation, illusion, wickedness, fear—then choosing discipline, faith, and truth anyway. It’s motivation, but it’s also a warning: don’t let the world program you.

What was the inspiration behind the cover artwork for “Jim Brown?”

The cover represents strength and grounding—like an identity stamp. I wanted it to feel bold and intentional, like the song: rooted, fearless, and clean.

What was the creative process like when making “Jim Brown?”

“Jim Brown” was a long build. I attended SAE Institute with the intention of finding the right producer—someone who could bring the record to life the way I heard it in my head. The song evolved through multiple stages: writing, refining the message, shaping the sound, and making sure the delivery matched the spiritual weight of it. I didn’t want it rushed—I wanted it right.

How long did it take to complete “Jim Brown?”

It took over two years to complete. That time was necessary to find the right creative partner and fully develop the sound, lyrics, and final energy of the record.

What is your favorite lyric in “Jim Brown” and why?

“Me calling Jah every morning” is my favorite because it’s simple, but it’s my reality. It’s a lifestyle line—discipline, prayer, and starting the day with alignment before the world starts pulling at you.

What do you hope fans take away from “Jim Brown” and your music in general?

I want people to feel empowered—like they can stand up again. My music is about resilience, faith, and forward motion. Even when life is heavy, you can still choose purpose and keep building.

What’s next for you? Are you working on any upcoming projects, or do you have any upcoming shows that we should be on the lookout for?

Right now, I’m focused on consistent releases and expanding the audience for “Jim Brown.” I don’t have upcoming shows announced yet, but I’m actively taking bookings and I’m ready for performances, festivals, campus events, and community showcases. I’m also continuing to build out visuals and press around the music.
